list.in.to.chicago this week: 06.28.2010

While I've got you here, I have an extra ticket for the Rush show at Charter One Pavilion a week from tonight, on the 5th of July. They'll be playing Moving Pictures in it's entirety, among other things. E-mail me if you're interested.

Things get a little thin towards the weekend, but that's not entirely surprising with the holiday.

Pick of the week
Gotta go with Los Lobos on Tuesday at the Petrillo Music Shell for Taste of Chicago, while Silversun Pickups apparently aren't quite big enough yet to sell out the Aragon, so there are still tickets available for Saturday's show. Also, Booty Movement Coalition at Martyrs' tonight if you get this in time.

After open mikes Tuesday and Wednesday, and gigs Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week, I'm happy to report that I get what passes for a week off. Which is to say, Vaughan's on Tuesday and The Globe on Wednesday.

Recap
So, funny story. Diver played at Fado on Friday night. This may come as a surprise to you, because I didn't mention it in the list last week. Fortunately, Tony and Brian were talking about it at our rehearsal for Thursday's Andrew Fraker & Sons show, because I hadn't put it in my calendar, perhaps expecting that I would be following through on my plan to watch the World Cup at bars in Europe instead of bars in Chicago (and on my laptop at work).

Anyway, that AF&S show on Thursday was a blast. We have pictures, and may have a recording as well. I kinda dug Murley Shertz, who went on before us and sounded like they might be somewhere along the Umphrey's McGee branch of jam bands, which I think tends to be a bit tighter when it comes to songwriting while being a bit more incisive when they do step out. Whatever. The drummer got to stretch over a groove in 5/4, and they covered "Man In A Suitcase" from The Police. All good in my book.

6.28   monday
Booty Movement Coalition (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
It seems like just a month ago that I was talking about the monthly free-form funk gig up in my neighborhood. Funny how that works.

The Zombeatles (Abbey Pub)
This is part of a book release event for a book called...wait for it...Paul is Undead: The British Zombie Invasion.

6.29   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
Come watch the Cubs play the Pirates from a safe distance -- any closer and you might get some "suck" on you, as I think you can add their win totals together and still already be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs -- and wonder when we'll get pro baseball on the North Side again. Also, people singing songs and stuff.

Los Lobos with Los Lonely Boys (Petrillo Music Shell)
I'm pretty sure these two bands have played together before, because it was glaringly obvious that they had to as soon as Los Lonely Boys showed up on the scene. I know I've said this before, but Los Lobos, for my entertainment dollar, is a better jam band than nearly every band that calls themselves one. Mostly because they don't make a big deal about it. They just let loose. No word on how their Crossroads set was at Toyota Park, but I don't know if I know anyone who went on Saturday.

The Hudson Landing with Dark Fog, The Clams, Hands of Hydra (Subterranean)
If you're scoring at home, this is that band with the serious Steely Dan fixation -- which isn't a bad thing -- that I saw on a bill with Soulfix and subsequently got confused with a band called The Hudson Branch. If not, try flowers.

Renaissance with Steve Hackett (Park West)
One of those late 70s prog rock bands that never quite made it onto my prog rock radar. Which is like regular radar, just in 7/4. Opening the show is former Genesis guitarist Hackett, which makes this a banner week for guitarists who have played with Peter Gabriel, as we'll see shortly.

311 with The Offspring, Pepper (Charter One Pavilion)
Yeah, I would have guessed a smaller venue, too. Or a state fair.

6.30   wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub)   COZ SINGS!
Anyone who knows me knows I don't like doing things badly. It's why I've given up on dating! No, but seriously, I feel like I have to apologize for last week, because I had no business trying to sing after shredding my voice cheering for the US in that last-minute win over Algeria earlier in the day. I think it'll be better this week, now that almost every team I might cheer for is out of the World Cup.

Cyndi Lauper with David Rhodes (House of Blues)
You know who Cyndi Lauper is, but some of you may also know that David Rhodes is the guy who has been playing guitar in Peter Gabriel's band since his second or third solo album and released what appears to be his first solo album just last year.

7.01   thursday
John Moulder Quartet (Andy's Jazz Club)
The longtime Chicago guitarist has the after-work set at the River North jazz venue. Which is really close to my office. Hmmm.

7.02   friday
Big Science with The Streets On Fire, Blah Blah Blah, John Rambo and the Vietnam Wars (Double Door)
Hey, it's two bands I've seen incidentally when I've gone to see other bands in the same week! The way things are shaking out this week, I may even make it out to see if my Cure comparisons still hold up a year and a half after seeing these guys for the first time.

7.03   saturday
Silversun Pickups with Against Me!, The Henry Clay People (Aragon Ballroom)
Last seen opening for Muse at the cavernous United Center, this band is big and reverb-y already, so playing the equally cavernous-sounding Brawlroom will either be a perfect fit, or completely unlistenable. Remember what I told you last time, though. Twenty-five or thirty yards back under one of the speaker columns.

7.04   sunday
Passion Pit with Robert Randolph and the Family Band (Petrillo Music Shell)
Seems a bit cutting edge for the annual Fourth of July XRT concert -- at least the headliner -- but I think that's a good thing, both for the show and for XRT as they seem to get deeper and deeper into up-and-coming indie rock.
