list.in.to.chicago this week: 08.09.2010

If I hustle, I can make it to the Budweiser stage by...oh, wait. Is there such a thing as Post-Festival Stress Disorder? I'm havin' flashbacks, man. Seriously, being that immersed in an singularly-focused environment even for three days makes me wonder how I managed both that and being at the World Cup back in the summer of 2006. Although I have my suspicions, and no, not amphetamines.

Pick of the week
No two ways about it. EXO with Dovetail Joint and Ivory Wire on Saturday at Lincoln Hall, for the music, the good cause, and the memories. And for the last time.

list.in.to.COZ
Should be at both open mics this week. Next full band show will be Andrew Fraker & Sons next Friday at Goose Island Wrigleyville.

Recap
Haven't quite collected my Lollapalooza thoughts yet, but off the top of my head and in roughly chronological order, Mavis Staples, Devo, Dirty Projectors, Metric, Cut Copy, Company of Thieves, Mumford & Sons, Erykah Badu, Wolfmother and Soundgarden stood out. If past years are any indication, I may pen a full review and post pictures by the end of August. In 2011.

8.09   monday
Neon Trees (Hard Rock Cafe)
Okay, it's probably over by the time you get this, but it's within 24 hours of the end of the festival, so I guess it still counts as a Lollapalooza "afterparty" from one of the artists playing over the weekend.

Taylor Hicks with Divebar (Reggie's Rock Club)
Yeah, the guy from American Idol. At Reggie's on a Monday night. I guess he's finally made it.

8.10   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
After three days of running around from stage to stage in the sun drinking Budweiser products -- unless you knew about the secret beer garden where you could get a Stella Artois -- a nice pint in a cozy Irish bar with some low-key acoustic music sounds like a nice break, no?

Piss Piss Piss Moan Moan Moan with Weird River, John Bellows, Tiny Concept (Empty Bottle)
Sanctified Grumblers (Hideout)
I guess the take-home message from these two shows is that no one wants to play on a Tuesday night? Would much rather see these two as a double-bill. Think of the promotional possibilities!

8.11   wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub)   COZ SINGS!
Of course, if weeknight, post-Lollapalooza decompression at an open mic in an Irish bar isn't your cup of tea, this one is at an English pub. Totally different.

Chevelle with Shinedown, Sevendust, 10 Years (Charter One Pavilion)
Shinedown are nominally the headliners, but local boys done good Chevelle are the only band on the bill I'd actually pay money to see. Remember back when they called this stuff "nü metal?" The umlaut showed just how serious these (mostly, with a couple of exceptions) overprivileged suburban kids with rock bands were, and presumably still are.

8.12   thursday
Mulgrew Miller Trio (Jazz Showcase)
I still remember seeing Miller with the late Tony Williams about three Jazz Showcase locations ago, mostly because of a comment my dad -- who was in town to pick me up from college -- made about how he seemed mad at the piano the way he was grimacing and making other weird faces while he was playing.

B1g T1me with Get Up With The Get Downs, Stuffed Animal (Beat Kitchen)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I'm not sure which surprises me more -- that there's a Tom Waits tribute band, or that they have enough support to play at least once a week, if not more. Good on them.

8.13   friday
Crystal Castles with Rusko, Sinden, The Twelves, Destructo, Alex Zelenka (Congress Theater)
The electronica duo from Toronto has just their second full-length release out this year, but they seem like they've been around much longer. Apparently singer Alice Glass is a bit of a handful live, so there might be a bit of additional spectacle.

Boris with Russian Circles, The Life and Times (Metro)
I've still got just the one random track from this Japanese band on my hard drive, and from the sound of it, one track does a pretty big disservice to the genre-hopping outfit. I have them pegged in sort of experimental electronica, but apparently they shift into punk, metal and psychedelic as well. As an aside, I saw two Japanese teens getting high a few people in front of me at Erykah Badu's set, and bonding with two heavyset Chicago-looking guys. They'd probably love it.

Hanson with Rooney (House of Blues)
Pretty much every review of the former teen band starts with the reviewer being surprised that they're still around and that they don't suck. Expectations being what they are, it's tough to tell if this is damning with faint praise, or if the brothers have really hit on a winning formula. Could be a bit a both.

Lydia with Analog Rebellion, River City Extension (Schubas)   SOLD OUT!
As usual, I like to track down info on sold-out shows from bands I've never heard of. Apparently this is the farewell tour from an Arizona band that are veterans of at least one Vans Warped Tour. They also have more former members than current members, which may be why this is goodbye for them.

Mulgrew Miller Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

8.14   saturday
EXO with Dovetail Joint, Ivory Wire, 2nd Story (Lincoln Hall)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
For five years now, the surviving members of EXO have paid tribute to their late drummer Doug Meis, who was killed in a car crash in 2005 along with two other local musicians, Michael Dahlquist and John Glick. This is going to be the last time they gather together on stage to honor his memory and raise money for the Music Institute's Gifted Artists of Tomorrow Scholarship. As if that weren't enough, Dovetail Joint and Ivory Wire -- who are admittedly almost the same band, save for the bass player -- will also be reuniting for the affair.

Hanson with Rooney (House of Blues)
See Friday's listing.

Mulgrew Miller Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

8.15   sunday
Interpol with Twin Tigers (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
Since losing original bassist/keyboardist Carlos Dengler, the New York band has added former Zwan member David Pajo on bass and current Secret Machines frontman Brandon Curtis on keys and vocals. I haven't checked to see if this is a permanent move, or just a mercenary arrangement, but the band's Wikipedia page only deigns to call them "current live members," so I think we know where the fans stand on this one.

Mulgrew Miller Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.
