list.in.to.chicago this week: 10.25.2010

I guess I couldn't bear to abandon you this week just because I'm on the wrong side of the ocean. Plus, I'm cooling my heels back at the hotel and all the TV channels are in Spanish. Or at least I'm assuming they are. Haven't actually turned it on.

Pick of the week
I'm pretty stoked for the recreation of The Royal Scam and Presence on Thursday night at Reggie's Music Joint, and tomorrow's Gary Numan show at Metro was penciled in on my calendar before I scheduled this business trip. If you can get tickets, Mumford and Sons at the Vic on Sunday is a no-brainer.

list.in.to.COZ
Diver will be at Fado this Saturday -- possibly in some sort of costume -- and also next Saturday.

Recap
Nothing to report here. I almost went to see Casiotone for the Painfully Alone purely because I knew the name and they were playing around the corner from my hotel in Madrid. But then I didn't.

10.25   monday
LCD Soundsystem with Hot Chip (Aragon Ballroom)   SOLD OUT!
I'd go see this show, except that, um, Daft Punk is playing at my house. Also, I think they're overrated, but that may just be my contrarian streak in the face of critics falling over themselves to heap praise on James Murphy. And there's the whole "I'm in Spain" issue. And the "sold out" thing.

Booty Movement Coalition with Vertikal (Martyrs')   FRIEND OF COZ!
Besides, for my money, I'd prefer more organic funk than an electronic dance party, which is what I'd get from the BMC monthly residency if I were in town.

Ryan Powers with Mike Chorvat, Your Little Ponies (Double Door)
Sort of a Vaughan's alumni show, as Powers and the Ponies both put in some Tuesday night appearances a long, long while ago.

10.26   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I know everyone will miss me terribly because I'm out of town, so go keep them all company. And by "miss me terribly because," I mean "not really notice that."

Gary Numan with Recoil, Architect (Metro)
I'll admit to not know much more music from Gary Numan than "Cars," but the more I hear of his influence -- Trent Reznor is a huge fan, for one -- the more I want to investigate his catalog further. And, not to make this all about LCD Soundsystem, but you have to figure the entire direction of electronic music would have gone in a different direction without Numan.

LCD Soundsystem with Hot Chip (Aragon Ballroom)
See Monday's listing, except this one isn't sold out as of press time, at least according to Metromix.

10.27   wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Andy from The Good Mondays will once again be holding down the fort this week. Show him you care.

Get Off The Couch (Villains)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
This is a monthly singer/songwriter roundtable-sort of gig, featuring Dick Prall, Brent Puls, Andy Rosenstein and Andrew Fraker. That last guy's name sounds strangely familiar.

Carl Palmer Band (Reggie's Rock Club)
As a prog rock guy, this strikes me much the same way as that Jon Anderson show did a few weeks ago. To see the legendary drummer from ELP and Asia in this small of a place is just one of those things you have to do if you have the chance. So if you're of the same mind, I expect a full report.

Halloween Show (Schubas)
Schubas gets in on the Halloween action, with Victorian Halls as Brand New, Republic of Lights/Kevin Thomas as The Strokes, Suns as Black Sabbath. Seems a bit early for one of these, though. And, really, Brand New?

Maroon 5 with One Republic, Ry Cuming (UIC Pavilion)
It's a bit of a dubious honor, but "She Will Be Loved" is probably the first song where I noticed that weird vocal effect that I later learned to be called Auto-Tune. Adam Levine seems like a pretty capable singer, though, so it may have been purely for effect.

10.28   thursday
Classic Albums (Reggie's Music Joint)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
They do this the last Thursday of every month at the south side club. This time around, it's both The Royal Scam from Steely Dan and Presence from Led Zeppelin, so, jet lag be damned, I'm going to try to make it down. Also, I want to call dibs on the first record from Asia for a future installment.

The Cult with The Black Ryder (The Vic)
After a dalliance with some of the remaining members of The Doors back around 2002, Ian Astbury is back with at least some of the anthemic rock band that made him famous with "Fire Woman" and "She Sells Sanctuary." It's tough to tell, given a list of "past members" that clocks in at over four times the number of current members. Granted, Wikipedia could be giving full band member credit to studio musicians.

The Vaselines with Dum Dum Girls (Lincoln Hall)
For a large segment of the population, this band is still that band that Nirvana covered on their Unplugged record. That said, they took an eighteen-year hiatus where that was pretty much the only stake in the ground for them, and the Scottish band has only been reunited for a couple of years.

10.29   friday
Shakira (Allstate Arena)
Maybe it's because she's not from this country, and is subsequently not a product of the American record label mindset and/or factory, but the Colombian pop star seems to have infinitely more depth than most other pure pop stars.

Halloween Fest (Abbey Pub)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Tomorrow The Moon as Pink Floyd, Penthouse Sweets as The Kinks, Ellis Clark and Epicycle as The Beatles, Who's This Mary as The Cure, Canasta as Elton John, Sentinels as MC5.

Groovatron with Strange Arrangement, Land of Atlantis (Martyrs')
I don't know anything about these bands, but I wanted to take this opportunity to suggest that, given their fusion- and prog-friendly bookings, Martyrs' should get in on the Halloween festivities, only with those kinds of bands, so you'd have, like, Kick the Cat as Mahavishnu Orchestra or something.

Chevelle (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
The local alternative rock trio is celebrating 10 years with this tour, which means they're still all probably under 30 years old. Get off my lawn.

Born Ruffians with Meligrove Band, In Tall Buildings (Empty Bottle)
I list this out of guilt because I told my cousin's good friend I'd check the band out years ago on his recommendation, and still haven't.

10.30   saturday
ZOMBIE DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ DEAD!
It's the "Angels and Demons" Halloween party at Fado, and we've been asked to dress up. I'm not entirely sure how that's gone over with the other boys in the band, but...BRAINS! BRAAAAIIIINS!!

Halloween 2010 (Double Door)
With The Last Vegas as Aerosmith, Midnight Shows as Duran Duran, Blackbox as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Husker Dudes and Husker Du, The Sweeps as The Cars.

Halloween Fest (Abbey Pub)
ZZ Listening as ZZ Top. Huh? Also, Phil Angotti as Buddy Holly, The Webstirs as Beach Boys, The Delafields as New Order, Curtis Evans as Nirvana, Androstache as The Pretenders.

Motion City Soundtrack with Say Anything, Saves the Day, Valencia (House of Blues)
I like this pop-punk better live than on record, at least based on that one Lollapalooza set a few years back and a cursory listen to their subsequent release.

Bob Dylan and his Band (Riviera Theatre)
This isn't listed as sold out. That can't be right.

Chevelle (Metro)
See Friday's listing, but it looks like there are tickets available for this one.

10.31   sunday
Mumford and Sons with Cadillac Sky, King Charles(The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
Very much the band of the moment in certain circles, and I'm bummed that Jam Productions flubbed their Twitter contest to win tickets, making me think the show was on Saturday (when I wouldn't have been able to go) instead of Sunday.

The Tubes with Ain't No ER Like A Stripper, Moist Guitars, Springa Sonic Droogs (Reggie's Rock Club)
I would be hard pressed to name a singer from any band playing this week who's name is as fun to say as Fee Waybill. Say it out loud and see if you disagree with me. This is the first time I've seen the subversive new wave band touring in, I think, ever.

Motion City Soundtrack with Say Anything, Saves the Day, Valencia (House of Blues)
See Saturday's listing.
