list.in.to.chicago this week: 01.10.2011

With all the day/month/year numerology lately, I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone point out that 1 + 10 = 11 for today. Anyway, on to the shows!

Pick of the week
While I don't have many of the individual shows listed, this week's Tomorrow Never Knows festival is taking over Schubas and Lincoln Hall for a good chunk of the week, and has a bunch of pretty interesting bands. And that Tribute to New Wave on Friday at the Old Town School looks like it could be a whole lot of fun.

list.in.to.COZ
Open mics on Tuesday (Vaughan's) and Wednesday (The Globe), and then Diver in our inaugural 2011 show on Saturday at Fado.

Recap
So, every once in a while, you get presented with a really, really obvious song choice. Seeing as how we had to wait until the Indianapolis vs. New York football game was over before we could start on Saturday night, naturally we kicked off the set -- pun intended -- with "Jet."

1.10   monday
Tin Lynott (Martyrs')
If you have a hankering for Thin Lizzy, this tribute band has got you covered. You've got to love that Chicago has a dedicated Thin Lizzy tribute band.

1.11   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is Monica's last Open Jam behind the bar before she goes off and has her first kid. Plus, you know, us, and songs, and stuff.

Chris Siebold and Psycles with the Nicholas Barron Band (Schubas)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Longtime readers know that Siebold is one of my favorite guitarists in town, and this is the third show for his new band. I may have had unreasonable expectations going into my first experience with this band -- Chris isn't shoehorning all his myriad influences into some sort of unified whole as much as he's sort of exercising them in turn, which certainly has its own appeal. And then he closed the set with a Pixies cover.

1.12   wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub)   COZ SINGS!
Last week almost fell by the wayside before a couple of musicians dropped by late to inject some life into what was looking like a dead night. Hopefully they come back. And bring friends.

Graham Czach with Ode (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
The aforementioned Chris Siebold is on hand for this one as well. Great players playing music that admirably tries to balance musicianship with muscle at times, but I didn't feel like I'd be humming any of the tunes when I left the last time I saw them.

1.13   thursday
The Besnard Lakes with Frankie Rose and the Outs, Lia Ices, A Lull (Lincoln Hall)
Marketa Irglova with Sam Amidon, Jeremy Messersmith, Bone and Bell (Schubas)   SOLD OUT!
Both of these are part of the Tomorrow Never Knows Festival, which is growing in both size and prestige. The Besnard Lakes put out a strong record last year, and while I'm familiar with Glen Hansard's output outside of The Swell Season, I'm a little curious about Irglova on her own. And I'm not sure if the five-day passes let you get around the fact that the latter show is sold out.

Buddy Guy with Big James and the Chicago Playboys (Buddy Guy's Legends)
The January residency goes on. I actually haven't seen any reviews of the first week from the new space. First week of the residency, that is.

Superbig with Blesh, The Weather Underground (Subterranean)
I feel like I shared a bill with this band a million years ago. Probably with URT, because all the Lindsie gigs were in the list.in.to.chicago era, and should subsequently come up in a Google search.

1.14   friday
Tribute to New Wave (Old Town School of Folk Music)
Admit it, this sounds like fun.

Oakley and the Aviators (Cullen's)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Remember when Oakley filled in for me at the open mic when I was out of town? I'll likely swing by his band's gig to show my gratitude. I know I've heard some of his songs in an acoustic setting -- and may have even played some of them at those Urban Outlaw Roadshow gigs -- but I certainly haven't heard his stuff in a full band context.

Buddy Guy with Eddie Shaw and the Wolf Gang (Buddy Guy's Legends)   SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing. And Thursday's show, as this one is sold out.

1.15   saturday
Diver (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ LIVE!
Okay, so my jammed thumb from last week still hurts. I'm going to try to get it looked at this week, and if it's injured worse than I thought, this show might get interesting, as I'll have to do my best Rick Allen impressions. And if you think that's mean, there's a Def Leppard tribute band that's been in the news lately because they are actually looking for a one-armed drummer. I'm small potatoes on that front.

Save the Clocktower with Color Radio, Ra Cuilum (Empty Bottle)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
They've gone from opening shows at the Abbey to headlining the Empty Bottle on a Saturday in about a year, maybe a year and a half. That's not bad, and might compel me to actually go see them eventually.

AM Taxi with The Architects (Beat Kitchen)
All I know about this band is that it's one of the guys from Lucky Boys Confusion, and true to form, the early start makes me think it's all ages.

Buddy Guy with Carlos Johnson (Buddy Guy's Legends)   SOLD OUT!
See previous listings.

1.16   sunday
Buddy Guy with Joanna Connor (Buddy Guy's Legends)
See previous listings.
