Now coming to you live from about a half-mile further south. Can you tell?
Pick of the week
If Metromix is to be believed, you can still get tickets for Jeff Tweedy at the Vic on Friday. Or, failing that, there's John Wesley Harding that same night at Lincoln Hall. And there's plenty of bang for your buck with the IPO fest show at Red Line Tap on Sunday night with the likes of The Wanton Looks, Telstar and The PowWows.
list.in.to.COZ
Definitely at The Globe on Wednesday for the open mic, and at Fado on Saturday with some variation of Diver. I'm not even going to try to predict what lineup that's going to be. Tuesday night at Vaughan's is probably unlikely again this week.
Recap
No shows last week -- packing for the move wasn't far enough along to allow for it.
4.11 monday
The Civil Wars with White Dress (Schubas) SOLD OUT!
Indie-folk duo from Nashville who follow the "got a song on Grey's Anatomy" path to selling out Schubas when I haven't ever heard of them. They've been tagged by VH1 as a new artist to watch this year, but I think the first bit may be more important to their success here.
4.12 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
Didn't make it last week because I had to pack. Might not make it this week because I need to unpack.
Rush (United Center)
At this point, the "Time Machine Tour" becomes meta, because they could be referring to going back to 1981, as they'll be playing Moving Pictures in its entirety. Or they could only be going back to last summer, when they played the exact same set -- at least according to Internet reports of the indoor leg of the tour -- at Charter One Pavilion.
Aly Jados and Geno Lenardo with Ghost of Eastwood (Angels and Kings) FRIENDS OF COZ!
You may recognize Aly Jados from American Idol, and you may recognize Geno Lenardo from Filter. Or from Ghost of Eastwood, with whom the guitarist is also playing on this bill.
Eddie Spaghetti and "Metal" Marty Chandler with The Bama Lamas, Slick Conditions, Art Garden (Abbey Pub)
My now former downstairs neighbor and Art Garden open up a bill headlined by the frontman from the Supersuckers.
The Civil Wars with White Dress (Schubas) SOLD OUT!
See Monday's listing.
4.13 wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub) COZ SINGS!
For those of you who didn't get tickets for Tributosaurus, maybe I'll go with all eighties material for the stretches in between the many, many people who show up to play every week. Seriously, it's a madhouse. You should check it out, and trust me, I'm sure we'll be able to squeeze you in for a couple of tunes.
Tributosaurus (Martyrs') FRIENDS OF COZ! SOLD OUT!
I think they've deviated from the single artist model before, but it doesn't happen often. This time, it's "one-hit wonders of the 80s" over two nights instead of two shows in one night, which is apparently so appealing that both shows sold out way in advance.
4.14 thursday
30 Seconds to Mars with Anberlin, CB7 (Aragon Ballroom) SOLD OUT
According to Wikipedia, actor Jared Leto's band has a motto. In Latin. Which is referenced in a paragraph discussing the deeper meaning of the band's logos. That's logos, plural.
Tributosaurus (Martyrs') FRIENDS OF COZ! SOLD OUT!
See Wednesday's listing. And they'll be reprising this edition at the larger Park West next month.
4.15 friday
Wax Trax! Records Retrospectacle: 33 1/3 Year Anniversary (Metro) SOLD OUT!
A very appropriate anniversary for a record label. With Front 242, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Luc Van Acker, Paul Barker, Chris Connely, En Esch, Guenter Schulz, Raymond Watts, Rights of the Accused and others.
Jeff Tweedy (The Vic)
The first of two shows from the Wilco frontman, and this one appears to still have tickets available.
John Wesley Harding (Lincoln Hall)
I've said it before, but I've had an appreciation for this wry English singer/songwriter ever since college, when I saw him do his song about Live Aid that made fun of Paul McCartney's microphone going dead during "Let It Be."
Mike Watt and the Missingmen with Small Awesome (Schubas)
This is part of the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival (CIMMfest), and includes a screening of a 2005 documentary about Watt and the Minutemen, followed by a Q&A, and then the show itself. Not sure if it's all under one cover charge.
My Chemical Romance with Neon Trees, The Architects (Aragon Ballroom) SOLD OUT!
A certain local music writer criticizes Muse for over-the-top bombast, while giving these emo kids a free pass. Probably because they're also from New Jersey. I cut them no such slack.
4.16 saturday
Diver (Fado Irish Pub) SEE COZ LIVE!
I'm four months into this iGoCars experiment, and something always seems to come up that stresses me out and makes me late to the gig. Now that I recognize this, we'll see if I'm able to account for it, or if shit is just going to go wrong no matter how I try to control for it.
Jeff Tweedy (The Vic) SOLD OUT!
See Friday's show. Seriously, see that one, because this one's definitely sold out.
A Rocket To The Moon with Valencia, Anarbor, Runner Runner, Go Radio (Lincoln Hall) SOLD OUT!
So we already had our prime time drama soundtrack sellout earlier in the week, and we all know that the other way bands get big enough to sell out without me every hearing of them is through the Warped Tour. And, in this case, a connection to Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy.
Ryan Powers with Model Stranger, Mason's Case (Beat Kitchen)
I've only seen Powers under his own name for the last couple of years, so one might assume that Callisto is no longer operational.
Wax Trax! Records Retrospectacle: 33 1/3 Year Anniversary (Metro) SOLD OUT!
Second of three nights, with My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Luc Van Acker, Paul Barker Chris Connelly, Blue Ribbon Glee Club and others.
4.17 sunday
The Wanton Looks with The PowWows, The Reunion, Telstar, The Hurtin Kind, Pop Dollys (Red Line Tap) FRIENDS OF COZ!
What's odd about this is that Tony is playing in two different bands (Telstar, in what's becoming sort of an annual appearance, and The PowWows) on this International Pop Overthrow bill, and I'm not in either of them. That's almost as statistically rare as winning the lottery.
Nicholas Barron Trio (Temple Bar) FRIENDS OF COZ!
So I heard through the grapevine that Vince Vaughn was at Temple Bar on Saturday night, and that he was actually mistaken for Nicholas Barron by at least one person, which is hilarious. Usually that's the other way around.
KT Tunstall with Robert Francis, Miggs (Park West)
I'm starting to think someone should mash up the "woo hoo" riff of Tunstall's omnipresent "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" with Blur's "Song 2." And maybe Homer Simpson. I'm not good at that sort of thing, so I leave it to you dear reader.
Wax Trax! Records Retrospectacle: 33 1/3 Year Anniversary (Metro) SOLD OUT!
Night three appears not to be sold out as of press time, with Front 242, Luc Van Acker, Paul Barker, Chris Connely, En Esch, Guenter Schulz, Raymond Watts, Mona Muir.
