list.in.to.chicago this week: 06.06.2011

I think that accidentally sending direct messages to your Twitter feed has become the new "reply to all" gaffe.

Pick of the week
If you haven't seen Los Borrachos (Thursday, Martyrs'), then you're missing out on a really, really fun time. Daniel Lanois' Black Dub (Park West) and Bootsy Collins (Congress Theater) both look good on Friday, and I'm honestly surprised that The Antlers (Metro) isn't sold out on Saturday.

Wednesday night at The Globe, and maybe Tuesday at Vaughan's. No full band shows for a little bit.

Recap
No shows last week as a member of the audience, and not much noteworthy from the stage. My apologies to those of you who try to live vicariously through my musical exploits.

6.06   monday
Iron and Wine with The Head and the Heart (Pritzker Pavilion)
I seem to remember listening to "Kiss Each Other Clean" from Sam Beam's artistic moniker earlier this year and thinking it was a bit more electronic than I expected, only to be told that my expectations were totally out of whack.

A Place To Bury Strangers with Grimble Grumble, Great Society Mind Destroyers (Empty Bottle)
Saw this band in NYC a few years ago, and remembered thinking they had a big sound that was hurt by the dispersal of an outdoor setting. Sorta fuzzed-out but still cinematic, in a way.

6.07   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
Tony will be there. The former Free Winona folks will be there, which I mention mostly to see if Niki is still reading this far in. I might be there.

Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs with Brandi Carlile, The Secret Sisters (Pritzker Pavilion)
An outdoor setting where you could have a little picnic with wine and listen to the sensitive croonings of LaMontagne under the skyline? Are they going to have a place for the dutiful husbands and boyfriends who bought the tickets to pick up their man cards afterwards? Seriously, though, should be a good show, and I am in no way questioning our bass player's manhood.

Dispatch (UIC Pavilion)
I've always been just a bit skeptical of the insistence that this college-town reggae-influenced rock band has achieved all its success organically through grass roots support. Somebody put up some serious money to get "Open Up" all that airplay, period. Just not a major record label.

Glittermouse with Princess Music, Laura Goldhammer and the Silvernail, Channel Four (Subterranean)
Good to see the locals keeping at it after that Enclave debacle we were all a part of a while back. Something about them reminds me of Canadian indie rock "collectives."

6.08   wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub)   COZ SINGS!
We seem to be taking "Sing Along With Coz" literally lately, as last week had two young Japanese dudes tackling "Creep" and a drunken bouncer from a Lincoln Park bar offering up "In Your Eyes." Because, well, why not?

Dispatch (Pritzker Pavilion)   SOLD OUT!
See Tuesday listing. And Tuesday's show, because this one's sold out.

Neon Trees with The Limousines, Eastern Conference Champions (House of Blues)
The Utah band has been associated with or opened for The Killers, 30 Seconds To Mars, Angels and Airwaves and My Chemical Romance, none of which makes me think I want to know more about them.

Panic! at the Disco with fun., Funeral Party (Riviera Theatre)
What, they couldn't find a third band with odd punctuation in their name?

6.09   thursday
Los Borrachos (Martyrs')   AMIGOS DE COZ!
I'm not actually sure if "Amigos de Coz" is the right translation, but if you've seen these local gringos do their pidgin Spanish versions of rock and pop classics, you'll know that "close enough" is fine.

Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers with Lubriphonic (House of Blues)
Remember back when learning "The Way It Is" on piano was the shit? Yeah, I'm old, and Hornsby probably doesn't appreciate that song being the only thing I'm going to bring up.

6.10   friday
Bootsy Collins (Congress Theater)
There seems to be a long history of the legendary funk bassist playing the same Chicago venue shortly after his former employer, George Clinton, going all the way back to the old China Club on Fulton.

Daniel Lanois' Black Dub with Rocco DeLuca (Park West)
When I saw the uber-producer and his ensemble six months ago, the vibe struck me as sort of "Shivaree meets Los Lobos," although I realize a bunch of you probably won't remember Shivaree.

6.11   saturday
The Antlers with Little Scream (Metro)
Did I see these guys last year at Lollapalooza? I don't remember now. The new record, though, is proving pretty memorable -- lots of good texture supporting the well-written songs. I'm sure the actual words are nice, too, but I haven't gotten that far with the record yet.

Ladies and Gentlemen with Bright White, Eight Bit Tiger (Martyrs')
At one point, these guys were in the running to be my new favorite local band, but then I got lame and they seemed to tail off a bit. Good to see they're back.

The Bon Mots with Panther Style, Wells-Next-The-Sea (Beat Kitchen)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I don't think former URT bassist Chris Frantisak is in as many bands as he used to be, but he still seems to be in this one, who cite influences back to 60s bands like The Byrds.

Van Ghost with How Far To Austin, Great Divide, Ben Ripani Music Co., Katie Todd Band (House of Blues)
Not sure if they're fully in the jam-band camp, but they do seem to hang around that scene a bit, and have been on an upward trajectory for at least a couple of years now.

Bell X1 with James Vincent McMorrow (Lincoln Hall)
Irish rock band who still have just one song on my iPod, and who apparently used to be in a different band with Damien Rice.

6.12   sunday
Foster the People with Canon Blue, Gardens and Villa (Lincoln Hall)   SOLD OUT!
I had honestly thought the name of the band was Torches and the record was called Foster the People, but apparently I had it backwards. I will say that I'm close to declaring this whole electro-pop, indie-dance thing over. All these bands are starting to sound the same to me.

Die Warzau with Chris Connelly, I:Scintilla, Rein [forced], The Dark Clan, AimOniA, Patricia Wake (Abbey Pub)
You have to wonder if the industrial rock audience renews itself, or if this crowd is going to be made up of folks who were around when that scene was taking off some twenty-five years ago. I'm sort of afraid at how the latter group has aged, to be honest.
