I said I'd go see Roger Waters if the opportunity presented itself, and that's exactly what happened.
Pick of the week
If I weren't going to see Patton Oswalt on Thursday, I'd seriously consider that rescheduled Battles show at Bottom Lounge.
list.in.to.COZ
Just the regular office hours this week. Next full band gig is Diver on 6/23 at Fado.
Recap
Remember how I was concerned that the lack of actual Pink Floyd members might be clearly detrimental to the performance of The Wall? Well, I needn't have worried. The parts were totally spot-on, and perhaps more importantly for this kind of thing, the tones were also totally spot-on, so the impact of both the music and the visuals were huge as a result. And now I've seen all the core post-Syd Barrett members of Pink Floyd, just not in the same place, or in the same millennium. Interestingly enough, both this show, and the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour way back in the 80s featured an exploding plane, an inflatable pig, and a big round lighting truss over center stage. Pictures can be found here.
Also managed to catch Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts at Ribfest, and it struck me as Rick Nielsen's kid trying to sound like Steve Earle's kid, but I mean that as a compliment -- those are all good people to have as influences. I do wonder how he got such a southern drawl in Rockford. After that, it was only a few very well-played songs from Heartless Bastards before fatigue set in.
6.12 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
We'll see how many Pink Floyd tunes we can squeeze into this thing tonight. I've got dibs on "Mother," and it would be cool as hell if we could pull off the harmonies in "Goodbye Blue Sky."
Mucca Pazza (Hideout)
I have to assume the crowd will sit on the stage and our resident hipster marching band will occupy the room itself. Can't see how it would work otherwise.
Ode with Bombbone, Avantist (Martyrs')
Now that I go see local bands so infrequently, you see the power of making an impression that one time a year that I do.
6.13 wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub) COZ SINGS!
Come for the Euro 2012 match replays, stay for the music.
Harper Blynn with Madi Diaz (Schubas)
WXRT deejay Ken Sumka's been all over these guys for the last six months or so.
6.14 thursday
Battles with An Aesthetic Anesthetic (Bottom Lounge)
The show from a couple of weeks ago was postponed. This is the new date.
Deerhoof with Ensemble Dal Niente (Pritzker Pavilion)
Free show. We had Deer Tick here last week, so all we need is Deerhunter for the trifecta.
Smashing Pumpkins with Hot Stove All Stars (Metro)
This is a Cubs-related benefit show, if I'm not mistaken.
Deer Tracks with Nouela, Shuteye (Schubas)
Hadn't even figured on this one when I wrote that last bit. ENOUGH WITH THE 'DEER' BANDS, ALREADY!.
6.15 friday
Jill Scott with Kem, Doug E. Fresh (Charter One Pavilion)
Moved from Thursday night. I will assume because President Obama wanted to go.
6.16 saturday
Spring Awakening Festival (Soldier Field)
If you're really excited about this festival, I'm guessing you're no older than 26 or 27. These kids and their dubstep. Get off my lawn. With Skrillex, Benny Benassi, Markus Schulz, Claude Von Stroke, Ferry Corsten, and others.
Jonathan Coulton with John Roderick (Double Door)
According to the Twitter, Coulton seems to have a new epic nerd anthem about the guys on Star Trek in the red shirts. I think this is also the biggest venue I've seen him play in Chicago.
Mustard Plug, Los Vicios de Papa, Dropsteppers, Rocksteady Breakfast (Cobra Lounge)
Skapunk bands seem to have more resiliency than I would ever have figured.
Indian with Witch Mountain, Lord Dying, Bible of the Devil (Empty Bottle)
One of many things to love about the Bottle is that they're consistently one of the best venues in the city for both experimental jazz and also for metal. Tonight would be the latter.
Lee Rocker with Johnny Murder & the 25 to Life, Bama Lamas (Bottom Lounge)
Just in case you thought Brian Setzer was the only member of the Stray Cats still kicking.
6.17 sunday
Spring Awakening Festival (Soldier Field)
Day two of the new lakefront rave includes two artists best known for commercials their songs have been featured in (Moby) or that they themselves have appearted in (Diplo). Afrojack, Moby, Laidback Luke, Wolfgang Gartner, Diplo, and others.
