This is the point where you need to stop paying attention to Jim DeRogatis for a week or two. He doesn't like Lollapalooza. We get it.
Pick of the week
Suffice it to say, I don't agree with Jim, but I do go to what some may consider great lengths to make it worthwhile, both in terms of the bands I want to see and the value for my entertainment dollar. So who am I most excited to see this weekend? Delta Spirit, Alabama Shakes, Gary Clark Jr. and At the Drive-In, for starters. Sorry, Florence.

Traveling for half the week, then three days firmly planted on the lakefront after that, so no shows this week.
Recap
I never did write that full review of last year's Lollapalooza, did I? Or post the pictures, for that matter. I suck.
7.30 monday
Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang with Natural Information Society, Jamaican Queens (Empty Bottle)
SMOD, M.A.K.U. Soundsystem (Pritzker Pavilion)
So it looks like Monday is Afropop day here in Chicago.
7.31 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) FRIENDS OF COZ!
I'm on a bit of a forced vacation from the Open Jam for a few weeks due to work travel and other things, but that doesn't mean you can't stop by and visit with Tony, Monica and Andy.
8.01 wednesday
Alabama Shakes with First Aid Kit, Dry The River, Filligar (Metro) SOLD OUT!
Delta Spirit with FIDLAR (Lincoln Hall) SOLD OUT!
Ah, yes, the Lollapalooza "aftershows" that happen before the actual festival starts. They really need to call these something different.
8.02 thursday
Shonen Knife with White Mystery, Rambos (Empty Bottle)
Probably as good of a big-name non-Lollapalooza show as you're going to find this week with the longtime Japanese power-pop girl group.
Ours with Model Stranger (Ultra Lounge)
Jimmy Gnecco was never really "big" in the mainstream sense, but this seems to be a step up in booking for the Logan Square venue.
Band of Horses with Michael Kiwanuka (Metro) SOLD OUT!
Passion Pit with GIVERS, Kishi Bashi (House of Blues) SOLD OUT!
Dr. Dog with Kevin Devine, The Dunwells (Lincoln Hall) SOLD OUT!
Kids These Days with OverDoz (Schubas) SOLD OUT!
One thing they've started doing with all these aftershows is including Lollapalooza "alumni" -- like Band of Horses, who aren't playing this year's festival.
8.03 friday
Lollapalooza (Grant Park) SOLD OUT!
Pretty soon the Black Keys will have played this festival more often than Jane's Addiction, which is saying something. I'll skip them (again) and opt for Michael Kiwanuka, Sharon Van Etten, Metric, Afghan Whigs, thenewno2, The Shins, Dawes and Black Sabbath.
Grimes with Big Pink, Thenewno2 (Logan Square Auditorium)
I'm wondering if this one is for real, since it features two Lolla bands, but is not listed as an "official" aftershow.
Bear in Heaven with YAWN (Empty Bottle)
tUnE-yArDs with Washed Out (House of Blues) SOLD OUT!
Jeff The Brotherhood and The Growlers, FIDLAR (Subterranean)
Paper Diamond with Minnesota (Bottom Lounge) SOLD OUT!
Frank Ocean (Metro) SOLD OUT!
The Black Angels with The Night Beats (Double Door) SOLD OUT!
The War on Drugs with Milo Greene (Schubas) SOLD OUT!
Blind Pilot with Kopecky Family Band (Lincoln Hall) SOLD OUT!
Pretty much every major venue in the city seems to be in on the aftershow action this year. I know Jeff the Brotherhood has gotten some press lately, so aside from being one of the only ones that isn't sold out, it might be worth investigating. Not sure what the aftermarket looks like for the rest.
8.04 saturday
Lollapalooza (Grant Park) SOLD OUT!
The biggest annoyance here is that Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party have a half-hour overlap, on opposite sides of the park. I think Franz Ferdinand gets the nod, though -- they're just a lot more fun, and I've probably seen Bloc Party more recently. Also planning on JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, Delta Spirit, Alabama Shakes and Santigold. Maybe Chairlift or Neon Indian, too.
White Rabbits with Dum Dum Girls, Oberhofer (Cubby Bear)
Doomtree with Naledge of Kidz In The Hall (Empty Bottle)
Of Monsters and Men with Yellow Ostrich (House of Blues) SOLD OUT!
The Big Pink with Sybris, Ballroom Boxer (Subterranean)
Bombay Bicycle Club with Hey Rosetta! (Bottom Lounge) SOLD OUT!
Jane's Addiction with Franz Ferdinand (Aragon Ballroom) SOLD OUT!
The Afghan Whigs with Bare Mutants (Metro) SOLD OUT!
Trampled By Turtles and The Devil Makes Three (Double Door) SOLD OUT!
Childish Gambino with Chance The Rapper (The Vic) SOLD OUT!
The Temper Trap with POLICA (Park West) SOLD OUT!
Gary Clark Jr. with LP (Schubas) SOLD OUT!
Twin Shadow with Poolside, Kid Color (Lincoln Hall) SOLD OUT!
Note the Aragon, the Vic and Park West also on the docket for Lollapalooza aftershows. Looks like JAM has decided to play along with the festival, which I'm not sure has happened in the past.
8.05 sunday
Lollapalooza (Grant Park) SOLD OUT!
As much as I'd love to see Florence + the Machine, they're up against the reunion of At The Drive-In, which is no contest. The rest of Sunday's itinerary will likely include Mona, White Rabbits, Gary Clark Jr., Sigur Ros and Jack White.
Chairlift with Alt-J (Empty Bottle) SOLD OUT!
The Walkmen (Lincoln Hall) SOLD OUT!
Divine Fits and Bare Mutants (Schubas) SOLD OUT!
I do wonder who actually goes to these aftershows, as I can't really conceive of staying out even later after being on my feet in Grant Park all day. Then again, I'm old, and you only need a tiny fraction of Lolla ticketholders to sell out, say, Schubas. But I suspect there may be a fair chunk of Chicagoans who don't want to go to the entire festival, but they've got to be quick on the draw to get tickets.
