list.in.to.chicago this week: 09.03.2012

This is sort of the calm before the storm, as I've got lots and lots of concert tickets for the second half of this month.

Pick of the week
Sort of curious as to what Little Feat has been up to lately, and you can find out Thursday and Friday at Park West. And there's always Bruce if you're willing to test the secondary market.

So, we've got a show with Andrew Fraker & Sons this Saturday MORNING. That's right, in the AM. Should be interesting. Belmont and Broadway at 11:45am for the Lakeview East Festival of the Arts.

Recap
So, the long and short of it is that I could probably watch Lindsey Buckingham play guitar for hours on end, just focusing on his right hand. It's downright hypnotic. The energy he brought to the entirety of his catalog was impressive, and the crowd justifiably ate it up. Some of said crowd, it must be noted, may not have bought any new articles of clothing since last seeing Fleetwood Mac in the late 70s/early 80s. The room that City Winery reminded me of most was actually more Park West than SPACE, with the same weird energy of a small-ish room where everyone is sitting down.

9.04   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
So, with the festivities down the street, it might be time to go 90s with tonight's selections. Or I could go with the original plan, which would include a song from my youth from a Canadian power trio. No, not that one. The other one.

Stone Temple Pilots with Crash Kings (The Vic)
My opinion of Stone Temple Pilots is much like my opinions of Family Guy and Futurama--seemingly derivative at first, but when you give the body of work some distance, it holds up on its own much better than you thought it did when you were living through it. All of which may make Kurt Cobain the rough equivalent of Bart Simpson.

9.05   wednesday
Oren Ambarchi with Cleared, Winters in Osaka (Empty Bottle)
It's really slim pickings for tonight, so might as well go with an Australian experimental musician who recently released an album comprised of just one 33-minute long song.

9.06   thursday
Cake (Aragon Ballroom)
A distinctive sound, a few hit singles, and the ability to play a 5,000-capacity venue after ten or fifteen years in the public consciousness may not be the home run of rock stardom that kids dream about, but it's so much farther than most will ever get.

Little Feat with Tom Fuller Band (Park West)
Okay, this is kind of eerie, because this morning I had some songs from the southern rock band's big 90s comeback album Let It Roll randomly surface in my head.

Chris Robinson Brotherhohod (Lincoln Hall)
I'm a little bit surprised that these shows haven't sold out, but on the other hand, it's been a long, long time since the Black Crowes were at their peak.

9.07   friday
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (Wrigley Field)   SOLD OUT!
I've noticed a couple of dead-on comments from Miles Raymer at the Reader this week, including the observation that Bruce has "never really stopped being the Bruce Springsteen who people fell in love with in the first place." And there are more than enough of those people to sustain a long and healthy career.

9.08   saturday
Andrew Fraker & Sons (Lakeview East Festival of the Arts)   SEE COZ LIVE!
We'll be doing our first ever street festival, bright and early at 11:45 in the morning. The festival is at Broadway and Belmont, so if you view it from a certain angle, and sorta squint, you can wishfully claim that we're opening up for the Springsteen show a half a mile away, later on on the evening.

Suzanne Vega with Musikanto (City Winery)
I will take this opportunity to direct your attention to the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon website, where you can search for a version of "Tom's Diner" as performed by Vega with The Roots behind her. It is the best version of that song ever. This is not up for debate.

9.09   sunday
