I have just learned that the average age of the Rolling Stones is older than the average age of the U.S. Supreme Court. In related news, this week you may be able to hear Roger Daltrey sing the increasingly irrelevant lyric "I hope I die before I get old."
Pick of the week
I'm all about Savvy-Grood and Magic Box at Martyrs' on Friday, and then there's either Alabama Shakes headlining on Saturday (Riviera Theatre) or supporting Band of Horses on Sunday (Chicago Theatre). Also depends on how hard you want to have to look for tickets.
list.in.to.COZ
Just regular office hours at Vaughan's on Tuesday, and nothing even on the long-range scanners right now. Feels weird.
Recap
Ended up having a gig on Wednesday night, so no Trail of Dead for me.
11.26 monday
Patricia Barber Quartet (Green Mill)
In her regular Monday night slot. The Uptown jazz club got some love from Anthony Bourdain last week on his show The Layover. Then again, so did The Mutiny, so I'm not quite sure what to make of the endorsement.
11.27 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
We are past Thanksgiving, which can mean only one thing. It's Grinch time!
Billy Martin & Wil Blades (SPACE, Evanston)
Chris Wood has the Wood Brothers, John Medeski has Spectrum Road, so it's only fair that Billy Martin also has a side project. In this case, a duo with Wil Blades, who I would call a Hammond Organist, except that he's from Evanston. Not Hammond.
11.28 wednesday
Simon Townshend with Dag Juhlin (Martyrs')
Pete's brother has a solo appearance in advance of the Who dates later in the week. I think it may be sold out.
11.29 thursday
The Who (Allstate Arena)
Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are playing all of Quadrophenia on this tour, among other things, and I've seen positive feedback from some of the east coast dates. With Pino Palladino on bass and Zak Starkey on drums, along with the aforementioned Simon Townshend also on guitar and vocals, plus a few other folks you've never heard of.
11.30 friday
Savvy=Grood with Magic Box, Dozens (Martyrs') FRIENDS OF COZ!
So, it appears that Savvy is changing it's name, which I may have noticed a while ago from their Facebook page. Whatever they're called, this is what the band has designated "an ACTual show," which likely means it's going to have a serious performance art component along with the mind-bending music. As if that weren't enough, I finally get to see Steve Gillis play drums in his not-so-new-anymore band.
Lamb of God with In Flames, Hellyeah, Sylosis (Congress Theater)
The metal band was supposed to tour with Dethklok earlier this year, but that was scuttled when their singer was arrested and detained in the Czech Republic on a manslaughter charge stemming from a fan's death at a 2010 concert. He was eventually released on bail but may still have to stand trial.
Ray LaMontagne (Chicago Theatre)
Being a somewhat diverse metropolis, I figure there has to be one person or household in Chicago that's trying to decide between going to see Lamb of God or going to see Ray LaMontagne. I want to meet this person. Or household.
Nobunny with Party Bat, Goblins, Rhythm Chicken, Ratso & the Rabbits (Bottom Lounge)
I had heard enough non-specific buzz prior to Lollapalooza to be curious up until I read an actual description of the act, which sounds a bit too much like lo-fi/garage performance art for my tastes. And I will assume the "former members" list on Wikipedia is some kind of inside joke.
The Who (Allstate Arena)
See Thursday's listing.
12.01 saturday
Alabama Shakes with Doc Dailey & Magnolia Devil (Riviera Theatre) SOLD OUT!
When I first heard this band, I thought it was another older singer with a young, hipster backing band. It turns out that they're all young, and they're actually from Alabama, which is nowhere near Brooklyn. So good on them.
AWOLNATION with Morning Parade, Youngblood Hawke, Anberlin, Atlas Genius (Aragon Ballroom)
The "new" WKQX is picking up where the old Q101 left off with Christmas shows, with smaller bands at the Aragon instead of the big blowouts at the United Center or Allstate Arena. In this case, I'm not entirely sold on any of these bands other than Atlas Genius.
Lovehammers with Strain Busy Sky, Superbig to the Bull (Joe's Bar)
Marty Casey and company are back with a new record, and are pulling Strain Busy Sky--who you may recall from a number of shows with Nitrous Foxide--out of semi-retirement to help celebrate.
Ray LaMontagne (Chicago Theatre)
See Friday's listing, only without the potential Lamb of God conflict.
12.02 sunday
Band of Horses with Alabama Shakes, Everest (Chicago Theatre)
Okay, I didn't realize that Alabama Shakes were double-dipping on this visit to Chicago. This has XRT holiday show written all over it, and there seem to be tickets still available.
Stuart Davis with Mike Reeb (Schubas)
I probably haven't seen Stuart Davis in at least a decade, and the last time might have also been at Schubas. That or Uncommon Ground. Back then my shorthand for anyone who used the body of their guitar as a percussion instrument was to compare them to Michael Hedges, but the more contemporary references would be Kaki King or Newton Faulkner. My recollection was that Davis was a tad darker than Faulkner, though.
