list.in.to.chicago this week: 01.07.2013

Happy New Year! May you see more live music in 2013 than you did in 2012. Obviously, I did not resolve to stop punting the list until Tuesdays on occasion.

Pick of the week
I'm excited about Sons of the Silent Age on Friday, even more so now that Bowie himself has announced a new album. In fact, I'm so excited, I may still have two extra tickets. Let me know if you're interested. And the Buddy Guy residency starts this week.

list.in.to.COZ
Just Vaughan's on Tuesday night. Looks like nothing on a proper drum kit until late February.

Recap
Saw Elements of Style on Friday, and at least vocally, I'm starting to get a Cold War Kids vibe. Also finished up 2012 with Tributosaurus as the Beatles, doing the "Red" compilation album, punctuated by slap-happy silliness that made it a whole lot of fun.

1.07   monday
MER, Marty Casey, Miles Nielsen, Alex V., John Charles Weston (Schubas)
Looks like local singer/songwriter MER has the run of the place on Mondays in January, and he's put together a pretty potent "songwriters in the round" session to kick it off that features the guy who almost got to sing for INXS and Rick Nielsen's kid.

Robbie Fulks (Hideout)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
The first installment of Fulks' Monday night residency for the year is titled "I *heart* Harry Nilsson," and features Steve Frisbie, among others.

1.08   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
Because of the way the calendar shook out, it's been three weeks since the last Vaughan's Open Jam. We're all getting a little twitchy about that, and who knows what all that pent-up musical energy might lead to. Bring your guitar and your favorite songs and join us!

1.09   wednesday
Dead Native with Fargo, Shelley Miller & the BCC, the Recruitment (Beat Kitchen)
Early Meadows with New Originals, Twin Peaks, Baby Kid (Subterranean)
Gel Set with Magic Key, Matchess, Sarah Weis (Empty Bottle)
Gabe Liebowitz with Little Light, Ty Maxon, Arthi Meera (Tonic Room)
I know nothing about any of these bands, but winter weeknight bills are the epitome of original local bands slugging it out, so I feel I should support them in principle, if not in action.

1.10   thursday
Buddy Guy with Bryan Lee (Buddy Guy's Legends)
Is this the year I finally go see Buddy Guy again during his January residency? It's been a long time. Still haven't been to the new place.

1.11   friday
Sons of the Silent Age with Waco Brothers, Death on the Autobahn (Metro)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
This is a David Bowie cover band project from Chris Connelly and Matt Walker that also features Garbage's Shirley Manson, Ivory Wire's Rob Byrne and Tomorrow the Moon's Steve Gerlach. The Wacos are covering T. Rex, and Death on the Autobahn is tackling Kraftwerk. Proceeds go to charity.

Third Coast Percussion (University of Chicago International House)
A percussion ensemble playing John Cage compositions at the U of C? It doesn't get much nerdier than that.

Chevere (Green Mill)
The venerable Latin jazz outfit gets the first weekend at the legendary Uptown bar.

Buddy Guy with Deitra Farr (Buddy Guy's Legends)
See Thursday's listing, and keep in mind that most of the Fridays and Saturdays sell out.

1.12   saturday
Grant Hart (Red Line Tap)
Another drummer who seems to have mostly given up on his website and turned to Facebook. In this case, the former Husker Du member seems to have a new record out as of last month.

Webb Wilder with Falling Stars (FitzGerald's, Berwyn)
It's been a while since I've preached the Webb Wilder credo: "Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard, grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em!"

Dwele (The Shrine)
The near south side venue booked a couple of strong R&B/neo-soul shows already this year in this one and then Robert Glasper teaming up with ?uestlove and Black Thought from The Roots this past Saturday, which I'm sorta kicking myself for missing.

Buddy Guy with Nellie "Tiger" Travis (Buddy Guy's Legends)
See Thursday's listing.

Chevere (Green Mill)
See Friday's listing.

1.13   sunday
Anne Harris, Cathy Richardson, Susan Voelz, Andrea Zonn (SPACE, Evanston)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Much like the MER show on Monday, this is a pretty packed songwriter roundtable, hosted by Ingrid Graudins.

Buddy Guy with Carlos Johnson (Buddy Guy's Legends)
See Thursday's listing.
