list.in.to.chicago this week: 01.28.2013

There was a hilarious, if somewhat troubling deluge of comments from young 'uns after the Coachella lineup was released asking who the Stone Roses are. Sort of the inverse of what happened after Arcade Fire won at the Grammys, at least generationally.

Pick of the week
If you can stomach the Riv, and especially if you've never seen Matt Cameron play drums live, definitely Soundgarden on Tuesday or Wednesday.

list.in.to.COZ
Office hours tomorrow at Vaughan's. On the long-range radar, Diver returns to Fado on 2/23, and Andrew Fraker & Sons will be at Metro on 3/8.

Recap
After seeing a bunch of Facebook and Twitter posts, I once again totally regret not going to see Buddy Guy during his January residency.

1.28   monday
Lucinda Williams with Doug Pettibone, Kenneth Brian (City Winery)
If the weather kept you away last night, or you weren't able to get tickets for Wednesday night in Evanston, you've still got one chance to see the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter.

1.29   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
I think it's Monica's birthday. Not sure if that means she's taking the night off.

Soundgarden (Riviera Theatre)
It may surprise you to learn that I'm not going to either of these shows. But I've seen them twice, and I really, really hate the Riv. I also never quite warmed up to the new record, so I figured I could take a pass. Note that enough tickets seem to have been released today to drop the "Sold Out" status for both shows.

Ellie Goulding with St. Lucia (Aragon Ballroom)   SOLD OUT!
The UK pop singer released a good pop record last year. Not great, but good.

1.30   wednesday
Nordic Thunder (Cobra Lounge)
This is a workshop on how to play air guitar. Really. For $20, you can learn to pretend to play guitar. Hey, if there's a market for it...

Viceroy with Redgrave, Sunken Ships (Empty Bottle)
When I last saw this band, their drummer's eyes were bugging out the whole time to hilarious effect, and they sounded awfully reminscent of Thin Lizzy.

Soundgarden (Riviera Theatre)
See Tuesday's listing.

Lucinda Williams with Doug Pettibone, Kenneth Brian (SPACE, Evanston)   SOLD OUT!
See Monday's listing.

1.31   thursday
Hot Water Music with La Dispute, Menzingers (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
The whole post-hardcore punk scene has completely eluded me for a long time, so this band stayed off my radar until all the clamor surrounding their reunion back in 2008 after a two-year hiatus.

Loudon Wainwright III (Old Town School of Folk Music)
Eventually, all shows at the Old Town School will either be a Wainwright or an Escovedo.

2.01   friday
Assembly of Dust with Grood (Martyrs')
This Must Be the Band with Sun Stereo (Double Door)   SOLD OUT!
Okay, since both Grood and This Must Be The Band include some of the same band members, I'm not quite sure how this is going to work.

Yo La Tengo (The Vic)
The elder statesmen of indie rock have a new record out. I haven't listened to it yet, and even if I did, I don't really have a frame of reference on how it stands up to earlier work.

Ode with Midwest Hype, Glittermouse (Beat Kitchen)
I liked the Arcade Fire/Broken Social Scene-esque collective vibe from Glittermouse when we shared a bill at that ill-fated Enclave show, and Ode impressed me with some intricate, Eastern European-influenced songwriting when I saw them play with Save The Clocktower a few years back.

Shabazz Palaces with Morris, Illuminati Congo (The Shrine)
This hip-hop collective made a bit of a splash at Pitchfork a few years ago, but I didn't get there early enough to catch it. One of them also used to be in Digable Planets, so there's some classic hip-hop pedigree adding to the appeal.

2.02   saturday
The Right Now with Bumpus, Organic Flow (Martyrs')
Dumpstaphunk with Dragon Smoke (Metro)
So, Saturday is looking pretty funky, both locally at Martyrs' and nationally at Metro.

2.03   sunday
Enslaved with Pallbearer, Ancient VVisdom (Reggie's Rock Club)
So, probably not a total surprise that the headliner is a Norwegian metal band. And Ancient VVisdom seems doomed to incorrect capitalization that makes them Ancient Vvisdom half of the time.
