So, this is turning into the year of unexpected album releases. First Bowie, and now My Bloody Valentine has finally released a followup to Loveless. Which came out in 1991.
Pick of the week
I'm still lukewarm on The Vaccines (Wednesday at Lincoln Hall), but this is probably your last chance to see them before they either totally blow up or fade into obscurity, assuming there are tickets available. And I'm really curious to see Magic Box attack the new Beck material on Sunday at SPACE.

Nothing but Vaughan's this week, but you wrote down those dates I gave you last week, right? Right?
Recap
No music last week, but I did see a really great movie. Details in Thursday's listing.
2.04 monday
Fall Out Boy (Subterranean) SOLD OUT!
The Chicago band has announced its return with considerable fanfare. And a very special intimate hometown show. And ego. The new record is going to be called "Fall Out Boy Saves Rock and Roll." Except that bands like Fall Out Boy--over-processed, under-written post-punk/emo--are one part of what rock and roll needs to be saved from, aren't they?
2.05 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
So, if we're looking for a theme or song challenge this week, I'm guessing lights or darkness, in homage to last night's Super Bowl blackout. Or anything from The Scorpions' "Blackout" album, for that matter. It's a safe assumption that someone will take this as a green light to play as much of "Darkness on the Edge of Town" as he can get away with.
Hood Smoke with Golden, Los Alquimistas (Martyrs')
From what I can gather, guitarist Chris Siebold is playing with no fewer than two of these bands.
2.06 wednesday
The Vaccines with San Cisco (Lincoln Hall)
The latest bratty Brit post-punk band, who struck me as the half of the Clash's sound that Hard-Fi didn't appropriate when they broke on the scene. Which is to say, the punkier side. They struck me as a bit immature when I saw them in New York a while back, so the big question for me is if they've settled down a bit, even though that might soften the brattiness.
Ryan Schultz Quintet (Jerry's)
This band features the core of the old Lexie Bloor band, with the aforementioned Chris Siebold on guitar, along with Larry Kohut on bass and Tom Hipskind on drums. Karl Montzka on electric piano and bandleader Schultz, playing bass trumpet, round out the lineup.
Tributosaurus (Martyrs')
This month, they become Stevie Ray Vaughan. Curious to see what sort of guest musicians they have on guitar, naturally.
2.07 thursday
Beware of Mr. Baker (Siskel Film Center)
What's that? A movie recommendation on a live music guide? Well, it's the excellent and fascinating documentary of Ginger Baker, who you may recognize as the drummer of rock legends Cream. I saw it on Friday, and it's pretty much required viewing for drummers and music fans alike. Plus, there weren't any shows that jumped out on me, so it worked out.
2.08 friday
Magic Box with Mother Hips (Schubas) FRIENDS OF COZ!
Barroom blues-rock from veteran Chicago musicians, which translates to an almost unconscious attention to dotting the i's and crossing the t's when it comes to the nuances and tones that make the whole thing work.
Cody Chesnutt with Whysowhite (Martyrs')
Since appearing on "The Seed (2.0)" from The Roots, Chestnutt hasn't released a full-length album until just last year, and from the sound of the Reader preview, it may have been worth the wait.
Buke & Gase with Ahleuchatistas, Hemmingbirds (Lincoln Hall)
Oh, good God. A Brooklyn indie duo that plays homemade instruments? I think that's the hipster equivalent of the singularity, when irony becomes too ironic for the human brain to comprehend.
2.09 saturday
Iris Dement with Jason Wilber (City Winery)
Given the nature of the room, it's not surprising that City Winery is starting to define its aesthetic around singer/songwriters with country and folk leanings, and they're doing a pretty solid job of booking those types of acts.
AM Taxi with Kickback, Chasing Mars, Dan Wade (Subterranean)
In the last ten years or so, I feel like Lucky Boys Confusion has cast a long shadow over the rock scene in Chicago. That's not a value judgment, just an observation. They spawned AM Taxi, who are tight with Company of Thieves, who are tight with Save the Clocktower, and so on.
Ty Segall with Ex-Cult, Trin Tran (Empty Bottle)
Apparently guitar-based music is solely about the visceral kick of distortion nowadays, which is the only explanation for the inexplicable success and critical acclaim for artists like Segall or Japandroids. I don't get it. And I don't think it's an old cranky thing, as I've heard music critics my age and older fawn over these guys.
Coheed & Cambria with Between the Buried & Me, Russian Circles (Congress Theater)
Speaking of bands I don't get, I wanted to like these guys, seeing as how they were always described as part of a resurgence of prog rock, along with The Mars Volta. But they follow the Queensryche/Dream Theatre branch of prog, which I have very little patience for.
Dada with Jerad Finck, 7Horse (Park West)
If I were cynical, I would guess that the two guys from Dada that are also in 7Horse are using the brand recognition of the former to help promote their new material with the latter.
Moe (Riviera Theatre)
This week is a new record for ignoring preferred capitalization and punctuation in band names. This jam band is one. I'll let you figure out the other two.
Luck of Eden Hall with Red Plastic Buddha, Energy Gown, Umbra & the Volcan Siege (Martyrs')
Why is this name familiar? They're a psychedelic band from Chicago, so maybe it's just osmosis. None of the specifics are ringing a bell. I know, great profile, Coz.
2.10 sunday
Magic Box (SPACE, Evanston) FRIENDS OF COZ!
See Friday's listing, except for this show, they'll be performing Song Reader, which is basically a book of sheet music from Beck. Special guests will include vocalists Steve Frisbie and Ingrid Graudins. This should be pretty cool. I think it's the second performance of the material that I've seen in town. My copy of the music got back-ordered, otherwise I may have tried a song or two at Vaughan's already.
