Doing it all for the nookie.

Pick of the week
I like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the Vic on Friday, mostly for the opening act, and then maybe local band Wolfgang Jay on Saturday at Martyrs'.

Recap
One thing I've noticed over time with Grood (formerly Savvy) is that they always play one really interesting cover tune, only to never play it again. This time it was "Let Down" from Radiohead. I'm also amazed at how consistent the band can sound despite what seems to be a constantly rotating cast of characters. Matt Walker was behind the drums again, and he also produced the band's new EP.

Elsewhere, I've been told that none other than Buddy Guy himself sat in with Nicholas Barron and his band this past Wednesday when they played at Legends. Very, very cool.

5.14   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I won't be there, but at least some of the rest of the regular cast of characters will.

Kurt Vile & the Violators with Steve Gunn (Lincoln Hall)
The first two influences cited on Wikipedia are Pavement and Bruce Springsteen. I'm just going to chew on that for a bit.

5.15   wednesday
Ed Anderson with Scott Tipping Trio, Ham Council, Big Ditties, Emics, Chris Siebold's Psycles, Symbia (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
This is a benefit for a guy named Mick Ducker. I don't know who that is, but the quality of musicians rallying in support speaks very well of him.

Youth Lagoon with Majical Cloudz (Metro)
What is it with Western states and individual songwriters who record and perform under an alias of some sort? In this case, it's Trevor Powers from Boise, Idaho with "dreamy yet tenacious lo-fi pop." I don't think all those descriptions work together, but whatever.

Telekinesis with Deep Sea Diver (Lincoln Hall)
There was some buzz about this band back around South by Southwest, I believe. I can't remember if I followed up by listening to them at all yet.

Limp Bizkit (House of Blues)
I think it's best if we just don't talk about that brief period of time when Fred Durst was actually popular.

5.16   thursday
Shout Out Louds with Haerts (Metro)
They are Swedish and they are reminscent of either The Strokes or Phoenix, depending on which part of the Reader preview you skim. Also, you can set up their band using just an allen wrench.

Fall Out Boy (Riviera Theatre)
The Chicagoland band returns with a new album called "Fall Out Boy Saves Rock and Roll." Having heard the lead track, I'm not entirely sure what they think they're saving it from. Or if this is what saves it, whether it needs saving at all. What I'm saying is, the single really sucks. Hard.

5.17   friday
Rodriguez with Jenny O (Arie Crown Theater)
Not sure if the resurgent 70s singer/songwriter is by himself here or with a band, but he's still riding the wave of popularity and good will after last year's documentary "Searching for Sugar Man."

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club with Thenewno2 (The Vic)
Dhani Harrison's band opens here, and they were a pleasant surprise at least year's Lollapalooza.

Of Montreal with Wild Moccasins (Lincoln Hall)
The Athens, GA band seems pretty eclectic, both in sound and in performance. The glam and funk thing can come across as a bit schticky to me, though.

10,000 Maniacs with Todd Kessler (City Winery)
It must be said that they've been surprisingly resilient since losing Natalie Merchant.

5.18   saturday
Wolfgang Jay with Sun Stereo, Choir (Martyrs')
Saw this band two and a half years ago, and thought they nailed the 80s retro sound really, really well at the time. Not sure if that means they will have moved on to hair metal by now, chronologically.

Foals with Surfer Blood, Blondfire (The Vic)
If you go see this English band now, that frees you up to see either Heartless Bastards or The National come Lollapalooza in August.

Outer Minds with Sybris (Hideout)
So, yeah, Sybris definitely seems to be back at it after laying low for a bit. I think I can only get away with saying that one or two more times.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd (City Winery)   SOLD OUT!
He was an up-and-coming southern blues guitarist when I first saw him on the G3 tour way, way back in 1997. Seems to have solidified his credentials since then.

5.19   sunday
Shins with Ra Ra Riot (Aragon Ballroom)
Honesly, I wasn't too impressed with the band's live show when they played Lollapalooza a few years ago. It wasn't bad, and the songs are pleasant and all, but the band seemed kind of flat on stage.

Turbonegro with Mount Carmel (Double Door)
I would have guessed rock en Espanol based solely on the name, not Norwegian punk rock.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd (City Winery)
See Saturday's lsiting.
