list.in.to.chicago this week: 08.26.2013

I think I recognized exactly four acts from this week's North Coast Music Festival in Union Park, in case you're wondering why I left that out.

Pick of the week
So, I'm still going to recommend Split Single (Thursday at Schubas) purely on reputation until proven otherwise. This Catalano/Chamberlin/Jones trio at Andy's on Friday and Saturday looks pretty hot, as does Sunday's Jazz Festival set from the Robert Glasper Trio.

Vaughan's tonight. Fado next Saturday with Diver.

Recap
You know all that traffic in and out of Chicago on Saturday? Well that's at least part of why there's nothing for me to recap this time.

8.27   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
Today is Alex Lifeson's 60th birthday. That is all.

The Cult, White Hills (House of Blues)
They've got two albums and an EP since returning from their second hiatus, but Ian Astbury and band also just released one of their earlier records repackaged along with an album that had previously only been available as part of a box set that's now out of print.

Kenny Loggins (City Winery)
This makes Randolph Street, by definition, the highway to the DANGER ZONE!

Bernie Worrell Orchestra (FitzGerald's, Berwyn)
Not quite where I would expect the P-Funk and Talking Heads keyboardist to turn up, but that's cool. And so is Worrell.

8.28   wednesday
Titus Andronicus with Lost Boy?, 10,000 Blades (Lincoln Hall)
The New Jersey indie band's third record has been out since last October, and it is not based on warships from the mid-1800s like the previous effort.

Todd Rundgren (SPACE, Evanston)   SOLD OUT!
To be fair, I was probably always more familiar with Rundgren as a producer than as an artist. Still probably couldn't name too many of his own songs, and I've been really slow to rectify that situation, despite the heaps of praise from people whose opinions I respect.

Get Off The Couch! (Wise Fools Pub)
You may recall this monthly series from that time when Andrew Fraker & Sons participated a while back. This time around the lineup features Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts, which should be pretty cool in the intimate songwriters' roundtable environment. Also with Ace Reporter, Lee Ketch (of Mooner) and Nine Miles West.

8.29   thursday
Love Language with Split Single (Schubas)
This is the second Chicago show for Split Single, the new band from Jason Narducy.

Jack DeJohnnette (Pritzker Pavilion)
The first night of the Chicago Jazz Festival ends with "Jack DeJohnette: Special Legends Edition Chicago featuring, Muhal Richard Abrams, Larry Gray, Roscoe Mitchell and Henry Threadgill"

Quasar Wut Wut with El Texano, Singleman Affair (Township)
Whoa. Quasar Wut Wut is still a thing? Pretty sure URT played with them once or twice, and URT hasn't existed in over a decade.

Todd Rundgren (SPACE, Evanston)   SOLD OUT!
See Wednesday's listing.

8.30   friday
Frank Catalano, Jimmy Chamberlin, and Percy Jones (Andy's)
I'm assuming this is at least tangentially related to the Chicago Jazz Festival, and it's probably the jazziest project I've seen from the former Smashing Pumpkin drummer. I'm also assuming it's the same Percy Jones who played bass in Brand X, who I actually saw many years ago back when the China Club was also still a thing.

8.31   saturday
Cheap Trick (Ravinia Festival, Highland Park)
On the one hand, I'm excited because I've never seen Rockford's finest live before. On the other hand, I'm bummed that drummer Bun E. Carlos is no longer in, or apparently on good terms with, the band.

Mudhoney with Easy Action, Protomartyr (Mayne Stage)
The seminal Seattle band never actually stopped being a band over the past 25 years, and what's more, they've been back on Sub Pop Records since 2002 after a brief dalliance with a major label. And now I'll finally stop seeing the ad for this show on the Reader listings pages.

Ty Segall with Axis:Sova, Running (Logan Square Auditorium)
Yes, he's prolific. I'm not sure how that somehow conferred quality, and I don't see the big deal. Having heard him explain his "concept" album from a few years ago, I can't imagine it's one of those things where I'd get it if I listened to the lyrics.

Frank Catalano, Jimmy Chamberlin, and Percy Jones (Andy's)
See Friday's listing.

9.01   sunday
Robert Glasper Trio (Pritzker Pavilion)
Next to last on the Jazz Festival bill is pianist Glasper, who released a pretty fantastic record last year.

Liquid Soul (Abbey Pub)
First Sunday of the month residency for the acid jazz mainstays.
