Can we have another three-day weekend? Please?

Pick of the week
Can't go wrong with the Onion AV Club/Hideout Block Party on Friday night and all day Saturday out on the street in front of the club. Lots and lots of great acts over a day and a half. Kaki King at City Winery on Friday also looks good.

list.in.to.COZ
Vaughan's on Tuesday, then Diver at Fado this Saturday night.

Recap
I'm starting to dig the idea of famous rock bands covering other famous rock bands' material, and it seems Ravinia digs it, too. I didn't realize that Cheap Trick would be playing not only their Live at Budokan album in its entirety on Saturday night at Ravinia, but also Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band from the Beatles. With an orchestra. They did a really good job with it. And then, when guitarist Rick Nielsen threw a copy of the Live at Budokan LP out into the audience, it was caught by none other than Billy Corgan.

9.03   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
A reminder that today is Tuesday. Not Monday. That means Vaughan's.

Dick Valentine with Scott Lucas (Double Door)
Actually, this one is in the new "speakeasy" downstairs, with acoustic sets from the frontmen of Electric Six and Local H, respectively.

9.04   wednesday
Tributosaurus (Martyrs')
As The Who, and only one show this time.

Indigenous (Mayne Stage)
I remember this band getting a lot of buzz a few years ago off of some WXRT love, somewhere in the roots-rock firmament.

Genome with Low Spark (Tonic Room)
Given what I've heard from the band, and where I see them play, I'm going to assume DePaul-based jam band until I learn otherwise.

9.05   thursday
Stolie's Last Stand (Murphy's Bleachers)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
After what seems like a million years, Stolie is passing the torch on the Thursday night open mic across the street from Wrigley Field. Hopefully this one will do better than the Globe Open Mic, where her torch was eventually passed to yours truly, who subsequently dropped said torch when it started burning my hand.

John Scofield Uberjam Band (Old Town School of Folk Music)
Sco has probably been around long enough now to be called a legendary jazz guitarist. One of the best-known jazz guitarists out there, at least. Which is a type of legend.

Stanley Jordan Band with Brendan Bayliss (Cubby Bear)
So I thought this was a weird show until I saw a picture of Umphrey's McGee guitarist Bayliss finger-tapping his fretboard. That was Jordan's big claim to fame some twenty-five years ago.

9.06   friday
Neko Case with Mavis Staples, Trampled by Turtles, Nude Beach (Hideout Block Party)
On the one hand, I'm really happy the Hideout Block Party isn't happening the same weekend as Riot Fest again. On the other, I don't think I'll be able to make it this year, either. Hopefully the majority of this lineup comes back through town later on their respective tours. Neko Case, in particular, who just released her new record today.

Robbie Fulks with Jenny Scheinman (Old Town School of Folk Music)
In between all of those Monday night shows at the Hideout, the local singer/songwriter has managed to write and record a new record. Kind of a bummer that this show is up against the first night of the festival at his home away from home.

Kaki King with Still Tide (City Winery)
When she first started breaking through, guitarist and singer King wouldn't have been out of place on that Stanley Jordan/Brendan Bayliss bill, but she's been steadily moving towards more traditional songwriting, and the balance between that and the guitar chops has been getting more focused.

Paper Thick Walls with Deanna Devore, American Wolf, Xoe Wise (Double Door)
Still making a strong case for my second-favorite local band at the moment, Paper Thick Walls has a bit of that folk-pop vibe, but then heads into more traditional indie-pop territory.

Dave King Trio (Green Mill)
So now we've moved past the Bad Plus being the one new jazz group I've heard of, and onto the members of the Bad Plus going out and cross-pollinating other jazz projects, including this one from the band's drummer.

9.07   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ LIVE!
It's your pre-pre-pre-Bears tailgate party upstairs at the River North pub. Let us take your mind off second-guessing your fantasy football picks going into week one of the NFL season.

Young The Giant with The Hold Steady, Superchunk, The Walkmen, The Both, and others (Hideout Block Party)
When I went to Pitchfork a few years ago, Superchunk was a breath of fresh air with real guitars going through real amps with nary a MacBook in sight. The new record has gotten great reviews, but has been hard to track down via streaming music services. Pound for pound, this is a pretty strong lineup to close out a pretty strong two-day affair.

Robyn Hitchcock with Eugene Mirman (Old Town School of Folk Music)
So, the irascible and inscrutable former Soft Boy, along with...the comedian who does some of the voices on Bob's Burgers?

Local H with Purple Apple (Metro)
Not sure if this is now a sort of farewell tour for drummer Brian St. Clair, or if he's already left the band. Also not sure what that means for the band going forward, seeing as St. Clair was literally half of the band.

Dave King Trio (Green Mill)
See Friday's listing.

9.08   sunday
Richard Marx & Matt Scannell (SPACE, Evanston)
So the 80s hitmaker apparently teamed up with the guy from Vertical Horizon a few years ago, recording both a studio and a live album. Have I mentioned that Tony and I have played holiday parties in the lobby of the high-rise where Marx lives? True story.

Comments

So check this out, Coz. I'm at the deli the other day and the lady asks me how my weekend was. I reply and ask in turn. She says she went to Ravinia and I said oh - Cheap Trick... how was it? She was disappointed, felt like they didn't play enough "Cheap Trick" material and not being a huge Beatle fan (she admitted to a Stones bias) also felt like she'd been cheated. Like she got a "cover band" instead of a classic rock act with plenty of their own material to play without relying on others' hits. Food for thought. In general, though - if I'm going to see a band, particularly one with a pedigree like CT, while I don't mind a cover or two if done creatively I'm not paying to hear them cover someone else's stuff. Just sayin'.

Of course, I don't get an alert for this comment, just the spammy ones.

To be fair, it goes down to how good the match is. Heart & Led Zeppelin is obviously great, and given that "Magical Mystery Tour" leads off an actual Cheap Trick compilation, this one made sense enough to me.
