Apparently we've reached the end of the Lollapalooza radius clause, which means several weeks of vague impressions of bands I had at least some exposure to at that festival. And this comment would make much more sense had I gotten the list out in time to mention alt-J on Monday night.
Pick of the week
This may be the only chance I ever get to recommend going to see The Replacements, assuming you can still get single-day tickets for Riot Fest on Sunday. Or track down a three-day pass so you can also check out GWAR on Friday and Public Enemy on Saturday. If you're done with festivals for the year, maybe The Wood Brothers on Sunday at Park West would be more your speed.
list.in.to.COZ
Just tonight's office hours at Vaughan's, where my mood will likely be a close reflection of the result of the USA-Mexico World Cup Qualifier.
Recap
I had every intention of writing out the lyrics longhand for the new songs on my plate for Saturday's Diver show, but I never got around to it, and hopefully there weren't any die-hard Elvis Costello fans in the crowd, because they would be quite cross with me.
9.09 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
We'll see how long the open mic community can resist coming up with acoustic versions of "The Fox" after the novelty song took the Internet by storm last week.
Chvrches with XXYYXX (Lincoln Hall)
Billed as Scottish electropop, but manages not to sound like Groundskeeper Willy playing with a MacBook. Debut full-length album coming later this month.
Deerhunter with Marnie Stern, Stagnant Pools (Metro)
Lots of critical buzz on this one, but I went back and checked, and this is the "deer" band I really didn't like very much at Pitchfork a couple of years ago. The latest record is okay, but still no great shakes.
Thurston Moore & John Moloney with Caught on Tape, No Age, White Mystery, Theaster Gates & the Black Monks of Mississippi (Union Station)
Okay, so there's this (literally) rolling tour that's crossing the country via train called Station to Station, featuring a bunch of core artists and then a bunch of special guests. Which could either be really cool or really, really pretentious, but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for now. Particularly now that Mavis Staples is supposed to be showing up.
9.10 wednesday
Chvrches with XXYYXX (Metro) SOLD OUT!
After selling this one out, they must have either figured their audience was just a bit too big for another full Metro show, or got stuck on the routing because of the Deerhunter show.
Youth Lagoon with Pure X (Lincoln Hall)
Another one of those individual artists who doesn't use his own name, but the difference between this guy and, say, Conor Oberst is that Trevor Powers is from Idaho, not Nebraska.
9.11 thursday
J Roddy Walston & the Business with Taddy Porter (Double Door)
The venue has been talking this one up, and led me to discover I actually have one song from Walston on my iPod. I believe the official category is "post-garage revival," and it's pretty serviceable in that regard.
Porcelain Raft with Save the Clocktower (Schubas) FRIENDS OF COZ!
So, every fifth post or so to my Twitter feed has reminded me that local chillwavers Save The Clocktower have released a new video.
Icona Pop with K. Flay, Sirah (Metro)
Another Lolla returnee. Caught two or three songs from very far away, and didn't make much of an impression other than largely calorie-free, upbeat EDM pop music.
Panic! at the Disco (The Vic) SOLD OUT!
I always want to confuse this band with The Mooney Suzuki, but these guys are a bit more traditional pop-rock. Listening to their 2011 release, actually a lot more traditional than I thought.
9.12 friday
Riot Fest (Humboldt Park)
Sadly, it seems the Riot Fest organizers have caved and given GWAR an evening slot on the first day. There's no way that compares to a constant stream of fake blood at 3 in the afternoon. Also featuring Screeching Weasel, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Fall Out Boy, who I will avoid like they're actually radioactive.
Cafe Tacvba (Aragon Ballroom)
The original and most venerable Rock en Espanol band has apparently gone back to playing with a drum machine. I'm not qualified to speak to the pros and cons relative to this particular band, as I've never actually heard them.
No Age with Running (Schubas)
Not to belabor a point, but I didn't like these guys at Pitchfork 2011, either.
9.13 saturday
Riot Fest (Humboldt Park)
Highlights for me on day two include Stars, Dinosaur Jr., Guided By Voices, Blondie and Public Enemy.
Glenn Tilbrook with Joe Michelini (SPACE, Evanston)
Half of the legendary songwriting team behind Squeeze is better than nothing.
Psychedelic Furs with Technicolors (House of Blues)
How awesome would it be if House of Blues showed a mini-marathon of John Hughes movies before this show?
No Age with Joan of Arc, Club Nutz (Empty Bottle)
See Friday's listing.
9.14 sunday
Riot Fest (Humboldt Park)
I finally get to see Josh Freese play drums again with the Replacements, after he kept bowing out of other bands he had featured with (A Perfect Circle, DEVO, Nine Inch Nails). I may have been at the infamous Taste of Chicago show that was the band's last up until this summer, but was way back on the lawn and didn't know what was going on. Also looking forward to the Pixies and Bob Mould, and then sampling some other acts here and there.
Wood Brothers (Park West)
The Americana duo have a new record coming out in October. As much as I've liked them since their first record came out in 2006, I still haven't seen them live.
Glenn Tilbrook with Joe Michelini (City Winery)
See Saturday's listing. I've probably mentioned this before, but it seems that both SPACE and City Winery are small enough and far enough away from each other that artists can play both.
