Despite getting a bit wet yesterday, I think I did pretty well picking and choosing the mostly dry outdoor festivals this season.
Pick of the week
Lots and lots to choose from. I'm curious to see what Patrice Pike (Tuesday at Schubas) is up to this many years removed from her reality TV turn. "An Evening of Davids" with This Must Be The Band and Sons of the Silent Age (Friday at Bottom Lounge) looks promising. Steve Earle (Saturday at The Vic) is pretty much a national treasure, and Earth, Wind & Fire (Friday and Saturday at the Chicago Theatre) will likely be a whole lot of fun.

Just Vaughan's this week. Next Diver show is Saturday, October 5th.
Recap
So, Riot Fest ends up playing like a comprehensive history of punk rock and it's many offshoots, which is pretty cool when you sit back and think about it. Lots of people are still glowing about The Replacements, but I dug almost everything I saw. Highlights included the truly bizarre Peelander Z, a re-energized Debbie Harry with Blondie, a brain-melting set from Suicidal Tendencies, more over-the-top metal ridiculousness from Gwar, locals The Crombies and the quality sets from Dinosaur Jr., Guided By Voices and Bob Mould that I expected.
9.16 monday
An Aesthetic Anaesthetic with Bow & Spear, Boots With Spurs (Burlington)
One of those local bands whose name is distinctive enough that you feel like they've been playing around town forever, yet you haven't ever seen them. And by "you" I mean "me."
9.17 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
I may or may not have new songs from Bob Mould, David Bowie and Arctic Monkeys. If not this week, maybe next week. Or the week after that.
Patrice Pike with Handcuffs, Driver (Schubas)
You probably don't remember Pike as a contestant on Rock Star: Supernova, but she was one of my favorites, despite being wholly unlikely to front a band with Tommy Lee and Jason Newsted. I think she could have fit entirely in one of Lee's kick drums.
STRFKR with Chrome Sparks, Feelings (Metro)
I feel like they've left some letters out of their name, but can't figure out exactly what it's supposed to be. Okay, not really, but shouldn't they have left the 'C' in there to be consistent?
9.18 wednesday
Joe Satriani with the Steve Morse Band (Chicago Theatre)
I still listen to Steve Morse from time to time, and I'm a big fan of Mike Keneally and Bryan Beller, who are in Satch's band, but I don't know that I'm still anywhere near as into virtuoso instrumental rock as a I used to be. The over/under on women at this show that aren't staff is 35. The capacity of the Chicago Theatre is around 3,500. You may want to take the under.
Rhett Miller with Trapper Schoepp (City Winery)
After playing that show with them a few months ago, Trapper Schoepp is definitely a good fit to open up for the Old 97's frontman.
JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound with How Far to Austin (Lincoln Hall)
This is a good opportunity to see a local band that's riding a wave of buzz and good press, and also to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
Airborne Toxic Event with American Authors (The Vic)
Saw this band open for The Fratellis back in 2008, and with the Fratellis mounting a comeback, I guess it's only fair to mention them again. Even if I wasn't that impressed at the time.
9.19 thursday
Dodos with Cousins (Lincoln Hall)
Can't quite put my finger on the particular flavor of indie rock, but I am definitely enjoying the new record from this band.
9.20 friday
Common (House of Blues)
I thought this seemed like a small venue for the Chicago hip-hop artist, which typically means it's a benefit or a promotional gig. In this case, it's the former, for the Common Ground Foundation.
This Must Be The Band with Sons of the Silent Age (Bottom Lounge) FRIENDS OF COZ!
Billed as "An Evening of Davids" with the Talking Heads and Bowie tributes, both of whom garner a lot more respect than is generally expected of tribute bands.
Dustin Wong with Cave (Hideout)
One of those times when guilt by association works in your favor. I've been hearing about Cave for a while, which is why I noticed this listing. Turns out Dustin Wong is one of those guitarists who is a lot better with a loop pedal than I am, and that's always entertaining when in the right hands.
Earth, Wind & Fire (Chicago Theatre)
After thoroughly enjoying Kool & The Gang tear it up opening for Van Halen, I feel pretty confident saying that 70s R&B bands with serious horn sections are timeless and always worth seeing if you get the chance.
The Eagles (United Center)
I'm sure classic rock bands mounting massive tours with ridiculous ticket prices would have happened anyway, but it still feels good to blame these guys for the trend, because they didn't even really try to hide it.
9.21 saturday
Steve Earle & the Dukes with Mastersons (The Vic)
With a lot of attention on his son in the last few years, it's nice to see the old man back out on tour again. He released a new record with his longtime band The Dukes (and Duchesses) back in April. Which I should really go listen to.
Estelle (The Shrine)
Yes, there were one-named English soul/R&B singers before Adele.
Glittermouse with Lee, Fall Classic, Jeff Brown (Martyrs')
Always good to see a young band putting in the effort and getting some good gigs as a result.
Tokyo Police Club with Low (312 Urban Block Party)
The second annual music and beer festival from the folks at Goose Island. Didn't actually realize Tokyo Police Club was still a thing.
Pere Ubu with Gagarin, Radiant Devices (Empty Bottle)
I still only really know this band because Living Colour covered one of their songs way back in 1990 or so, but that's always marked them as someone I had at least a passing curiosity to check out.
Earth, Wind & Fire (Chicago Theatre)
See Friday's listing.
The Eagles (United Center)
See Friday's listing.
9.22 sunday
Herbert Gronemeyer (Lincoln Hall)
Apparently, he's really big in Germany, which led someone somewhere to inexplicably book him at the Chicago Theatre the last time he came through town. Given that Lincoln Hall is smaller by a factor of ten, I'm guessing that didn't go so well.
