I tried listening to William Shatner's new progressive rock album today, but only lasted about thirty seconds before the sheer ridiculousness of it made me unable to continue.
Pick of the week
So, a bunch of guys playing the soundtrack to This Is Spinal Tap (Tuesday at Quencher's) sounds like a lot of fun. On Thursday, you could check the resale market for Franz Ferdinand (The Vic) or Tame Impala (The Riv), or go with slightly less mainstream and less sold-out options Zappa Plays Zappa (Copernicus Center) or Mark Lanegan (Old Town School of Folk Music).

Just Vaughan's this week. For real this time.
Recap
Technically, I saw a show already this week, but we'll save that review for next week, where it would live if I actually sent this out on time. On the plus side, I've finally figured out why Dropbox wasn't syncing between my home and work computers.
So, not only did we learn on Saturday that we could play "Sunday Bloody Sunday" without having ever played it before, we learned we could play the Under a Blood Red Sky version.
10.08 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
October 8th is the anniversary of the Chicago Fire. The actual fire and the soccer team. But not the TV show. So, anyway, songs about fire. Or soccer.
Soundtrack Serenade (Quencher's)
Never heard of this thing before, but tonight they'll be performing the soundtrack to This Is Spinal Tap. Not only that, but they will be using twelve different drummers, which seems entirely appropriate.
Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg featuring Andrew W.K. with Figo (Double Door)
No idea if being second banana to a Ramone will make Andrew W.K. downplay his over-the-top party persona just a little. Probably not.
10.09 wednesday
Grouplove with Rubens (Lincoln Hall)
The vibe I get from this band is that emerging indie-dance party band thing that also might describe bands like Foster The People and fun.
Ben Ottewell, Buddy (City Winery)
This is the singer/guitarist from the band Gomez that always reminds me of Anto's friend George.
10.10 thursday
Franz Ferdinand with Frankie Rose (The Vic) SOLD OUT!
Hopefully the weather is better than the last time these guys were here, when they were one of the first bands to play once they let people back into Grant Park for Lollapalooza after the torrential rains that forced everyone to evacuate. The one-two punch of the band's taut songwriting and onstage poise makes for a pretty potent live show.
Zappa Plays Zappa (Copernicus Center)
Dweezil is back with his band, playing his father's music. Starting to see some turnover in the personnel, but that is as inevitable now as it was with Frank. Looks like no mallet percussionist this time around, which is too bad.
Tame Impala with White Denim (Riviera Theatre) SOLD OUT!
Someone in my Twitter feed saw this band at Austin City Limits this past weekend and really dug it. I feel like I've really liked what I've heard from the "neo-psychedelic" band, but then I feel like I'm confusing them with Local Natives.
Mark Lanegan with Sean Wheeler, Zander Schloss (Old Town School of Folk Music)
Touring in support of a covers album that I've only just had on in the background at work from time to time. Does anyone know if we're going to get another Gutter Twins record?
10.11 friday
Laurence Hobgood Quintet (Green Mill)
The local jazz pianist and frequent sideman with his own group, and featuring Ernie Watts on tenor sax.
10.12 saturday
Boy with Greg Holden (Lincoln Hall)
More organic than I would maybe expect from a "Swiss/German pop duo," with pianos, acoustic guitars and mallet percussion right out of the gate on their debut from earlier this year. In a weird bit of conceptual continuity, they were signed to their first record deal in Germany by none other than that Herbert Grönemeyer guy who played here a few weeks ago.
Father John Misty with Kate Berlant (The Vic)
I thought this was a side project from one of the guys in Fleet Foxes, but he's described on Wikipedia now as a former member of that band, with a quote stating that his involvement with the band was "exaggerated."
Laurence Hobgood Quintet (Green Mill)
See Friday's listing.
10.13 sunday
The Weeknd with Banks, Anna Lunoe (Chicago Theatre)
So, I realize I'm getting older, and that I'm getting increasingly out of touch with what's new and hip, but everything I read about this artist talks about how he released a series of "mixtapes." I don't understand this. A mixtape is traditionally someone else's music, isn't it? How is this different from releasing an EP?
Hanson with David Ryan Harris (House of Blues)
Raise your hand if you thought these kids would still be at it a dozen years later. Liar.
Boy with Greg Holden (Lincoln Hall)
See Saturday's listing.
