I wasn't going, but still a little bummed that the Emile Sande show on Saturday was cancelled.
Pick of the week
Since this is going out too late to recommend Monday's Janelle Monáe show, I gotta go with M. Doughty finally revisiting the Soul Coughing songs on Thursday at Park West.

Just Vaughan's this week. Diver next Saturday at Fado.
Recap
A few things about Ginger Baker stood out to me last Monday night with his Jazz Confusion band. Other than him inexplicably still being alive, that is. First, he was doing some wicked things with his left foot on the hi-hat, particularly on the 6/8 and 3/4 tunes. Second, he's squarely in the Elvin Jones/Max Roach school of jazz drumming. Third, he gets a hell of a big sound from a really short stroke with his sticks.
10.21 monday
Janelle Monáe with Blah Blah Blah (The Vic) SOLD OUT!
She's been pretty much redefining R&B on her first two records, but I'm really curious to see how the sprawling ambition of those efforts translates live.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra with Wolf People, Lionlimb (Lincoln Hall)
I saw a bit of Twitter buzz about this band's midday set at Lollapalooza, but following up with them on record didn't impress me too much.
Nik Turner's Hawkwind with Killer Moon, Plastic Crimewave Syndicate (Reggie's Rock Club)
One of those situations where a guy who was in a band doesn't have the legal rights to the name of said band, and must qualify it somehow. Said band happened to be pretty much the original space-rock band.
10.22 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
In which songs will be played and beers will be consumed.
Valerie June (Schubas)
So far, I like Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys better as a producer than an artist, and he's put his full weight behind this young blues singer. Early show was added after the late show sold out.
Filter with Red, Otherwise (House of Blues)
Yikes. It's been fourteen years since Title of Record came out. Richard Patrick has released four albums under the Filter name since then, including last year's The Sun Comes Out Tonight. An almost brand new backing band is out in support of that record.
10.23 wednesday
King Khan & the Shrines with Hell Shovel, Heavy Times (Bottom Lounge)
There's a fine line between exuberant garage-rock and hipster self-indulgence, and Khan tends to wander band and forth over that line to my ear.
Bon Jovi (United Center)
For the second straight time, tickets for the New Jersey native and recovering hair metal singer started showing up on Groupon and the like almost immediately after they went on sale to the general public. So I'm figuring state fairs within a couple of years.
10.24 thursday
M. Doughty with Sons of Hippies (Park West)
Going back to M. instead of Mike seems appropriate, seeing as how that's he billed himself when he fronted Soul Coughing, and Doughty has reclaimed a bunch of that band's songs as his own on his latest record. I believe he's supporting that record with a full band instead of the solo/duo format he's been fond of more recently.
Oozing Wound with The Body, Running, Toupee (Empty Bottle)
The Reader describes the local metal band as "obviously joking around" but also "deadly serious." Which is to say, it's self-aware metal, which is how I like my metal.
Rod Stewart and Steve Winwood (United Center)
This ends up being easy for the United Center staff, because they can probably just stock all the same hair care products for the dressing room that they did on Wednesday for Bon Jovi.
10.25 friday
The Head and the Heart, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, Quiet Life (Riviera Theatre) SOLD OUT!
There are a whole bunch of post-Mumford indie folk bands. Only a few of them can sell out 3,000+ seats.
Ode with Elephant Gun, DJ Romasoul, Franz Nicolay (Township)
Saw these guys once a while ago, and haven't made it back to see them again just yet. I think I even bought one of their CDs.
10.26 saturday
Wild Belle with Saint Rich (Metro)
The highly regarded local duo backed by a full band sounded good at Lollapalooza, but not quite as great as the buzz had made them out to be. A little on the artsy side of sorta baroque indie pop.
Dada Life with Clockwork, Craze, Henry Fong, Caveat, Dotexe (Aragon Ballroom)
Dada (Park West)
Okay, now that's just funny. And I think there's a band called Dads playing earlier in the week.
10.27 sunday
Mutts with Elephant Gun, North by North, Prom Night, Whole Damn Town, Evacuate the Earth, Hobbyist, Audiences (Quenchers)
The third night of something called "Phantom Phest," and which I'm guessing may involve bands pretending to be other bands. Starts at 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, which features that band Mutts that a New York colleague told me about a long while ago.
Jars of Clay with Trent Dabbs, Anu Alphonse (Subterranean)
From Tennessee by way of southern Illinois, and a long, long way from "Flood," which got them at least a bit of a breakthrough way back in 1995. From what I remember of that song, it's not all that surprising that the origin story of the band involves a Toad The Wet Sprocket t-shirt.
