I know that the Tomorrow Never Knows Festival concluded...yesterday. Did I just blow your mind?
Pick of the week
A bit of a light week, but you've still got a handful of Buddy Guy dates at Legends that aren't sold out. Thursday and Sunday, to be specific.
list.in.to.COZ
Vaughan's on Tuesday night. Next Diver gig is on the first of February, and there might be something big coming up in March that I don't want to jinx just yet.
Recap
So, we were joined on stage Saturday night for a couple of songs by a young woman from Michigan who had just made it through the first round of auditions for The Voice. Then everybody went home halfway through the second set. So a bit of a mixed bag.
1.20 monday
Charlotte Martin (Schubas)
I feel like I've seen the name before, but I would think I would remember more of the details about a piano-based singer/songwriter originally from downstate who once represented Illinois in a Miss Teen USA pageant. She was previously listed here almost ten years ago as part of a House of Blues bill topped by Liz Phair.
1.21 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
Sooner or later, I feel like this will end up as the longest-running acoustic open mic in Chicago. Any other contenders that you can think of? Might have to learn an Arctic Monkeys tune to celebrate the return of the Polar Vortex. Dress warm, kids.
M13 (Quencher's Saloon) FRIENDS OF COZ!
Chicago's only (I think) progressive big band has a new album either out or forthcoming. And that video clip of Hipskind recording the drum parts keeps bubbling up to the top of my Facebook News Feed.
1.22 wednesday
Perfect Pussy with Broken Prayer, Split Feet (Schubas)
Several tweets about this show have pointed out that if you're going to Google this band, you should include "band" in your search. Lots of different influences cited in the Reader capsule, but it also got my Spidey Sense tingling about maybe being one of those new guitar bands that is all attitude and no depth.
Ham Council with Big Ditties, Oh Yeahs (Martyrs')
Pretty sure the omnipresent Chris Siebold plays guitar with Ham Council, which is a pretty awesome band name. Just weird enough to stick with you and not confer actual weirdness.
1.23 thursday
The Wailers with British Dependency, Afrozep (House of Blues)
Not sure how many of Bob Marley's original band are still involved, but whoever is left will be playing Legend in its entirety to celebrate the albums 30th anniversary. I honestly would have guessed it was older than that.
Buddy Guy with The Breezy Rodio Band (Buddy Guy's Legends)
Down to the final six shows of the residency, with tickets still available for four of them.
1.24 friday
Bonerama (SPACE, Evanston)
Trombones, bass trombones, sousaphones and cover songs. Heck, they might not even need microphones with that much brass in that small of a room.
Buddy Guy with Carlos Johnson (Buddy Guy's Legends) SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing.
1.25 saturday
Los Campesinos! (Metro)
One of those bands that emerged around the same time and with a bit of the same vibe as Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire, and what I have learned from Wikipedia just now is that while they formed in Wales, no one in the band is actually Welsh.
Rusted Root with Donna the Buffalo (Concord Music Hall)
The Chicago Blues & Bluegrass Festival continues with a former heavyweight of the jam band scene.
Bad Veins with Save the Clocktower, Chasing Mars (Beat Kitchen) FRIENDS OF COZ!
Of course, Save the Clocktower is Chicago's pre-eminent sorta chill electronic rock band with people I know in it.
Ode with Electro Mehteran, Doubledownnation, Audio Content (Elbo Room)
Coincidentally, the first and only time I saw Ode was on a bill with Save The Clocktower. Still categorizing them as indie-folk with the caveat that I'm not limiting that description to American folk music.
Buddy Guy with Toronzo Cannon & The Cannonball Express (Buddy Guy's Legends) SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing.
1.26 sunday
Dirtybird with the Howl, Bearer, Richardson Richardson, Mraz Volta (Township)
I am really, really hoping that Mraz Volta backs up their clever name by somehow combining the music of Jason Mraz and The Mars Volta, but I'm not holding my breath.
Buddy Guy with Dave Weld (Buddy Guy's Legends)
See Thursday's listing.
