As happy as I am that Booty Movement Coalition has renewed their last Monday of the month residency at Martyrs', I don't think any of us were going out last night.
Pick of the week
Seriously, if Buddy Guy (Thursday and Friday at Legends) still isn't sold out, take advantage.
list.in.to.COZ
I'll be at Vaughan's on Tuesday, then it's already our third Diver show of the year at Fado on Saturday.
Recap
No live music last week, but I did see Savion Glover on Saturday, and was struck by how much the tap dancer's performance played out like a jazz show. Four or five pieces with a loose structure where each individual dancer took a solo. There was one that sounded almost like Afropop, the way the recurring backbone of a rhythm played out. Very cool.
1.28 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
I feel like we need to be aspirational tonight. Songs about heat. Songs about fire. Songs about summer. Heck, even songs from Hawaii native Jack Johnson.
1.29 wednesday
Aaron McEvers's M13 (Jazz Showcase)
Part of the BluJazz Festival, and a rare non-Quencher's appearance by the progressive big band.
Gilby Clarke with Young Distractions, Romantic Rebel, Bryan Wilkinson (Double Door)
The former Guns N' Roses guitarist--he replaced Izzy Stradlin--recently sat down with former Q101 DJ James Van Osdol for JVO's podcast, but it's a subscription-based thing, so I'll have to just assume it was an interesting interview.
1.30 thursday
Dead Woods with Frosting, Katastrofist, Tomorrow the Moon (Beat Kitchen) FRIENDS OF COZ!
So that last Tomorrow the Moon show I mentioned ended up getting canceled at the last minute. They've gotten a new date on the calendar to make up for it, and I may actually be able to make it for this one.
Hood Smoke with Lowdown Brass Band (Double Door)
Fresh off a short tour with Howard Levy, guitar heavyweight Chris Siebold holds down the six-string fort with this modern funk band.
Buddy Guy with Linsey Alexander (Buddy Guy's Legends)
Not sure if the cold is keeping people away, but the last two shows of the January residency do NOT appear to be sold out.
Screaming Females with White Mystery (Hideout)
The New Brunswick, NJ punk trio recorded their 2012 album with Chicago's own Steve Albini.
1.31 friday
Branford Marsalis Quartet with Ray Anderson Pocket Brass (Symphony Center)
One of the biggest names in jazz, and we've seen time and time again that Symphony Center is the home for big, one-off jazz shows for those few jazz acts too big to do six nights at the Showcase.
Patty Griffin with Anais Mitchell (Metro) SOLD OUT!
Fun fact: Griffin's debut album was produced by Nile Rodgers, recently seen with Daft Punk at the Grammys.
Screaming Females with Fake Limbs (Hideout)
See Thursday's listing, but without the insufferable White Mystery opening.
Buddy Guy with Nublue Band (Buddy Guy's Legends)
Last night of the residency. Tickets (surprisingly) still available.
2.01 saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub) SEE COZ LIVE!
It's almost the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. We will do our best to commemorate that landmark performance.
Califone with William Tyler (Lincoln Hall)
For a long while, Califone was "the band Tim Rutili started after Red Red Meat," but now it has outlasted that band by a wide, wide margin.
Galactic with Stepkids (Park West)
The New Orleans funk band had been touring with Corey Glover from Living Colour for a stretch, but it looks like drummer Stanton Moore and crew are left to their own funky devices for this outing.
Ultraviolet Hippopotamus with Steeze, Sure Fire Groove (Cubby Bear)
Band name of the week, by a wide margin.
2.02 sunday
Liquid Soul (Abbey Pub)
The acid jazz stalwarts' occasional Sunday residency continues.
