list.in.to.chicago this week: 02.03.2014

Starting to see some good stuff go on sale for shows coming up when it finally gets warmer and stops snowing. If it ever stops snowing.

Pick of the week
I suspect that Tributosaurus as P-Funk (Wednesday at Martyrs' and Friday at Wire in Berwyn) is going to be an absolute blast. Lots of room for the band to stretch out.

Just regular office hours at Vaughan's this week. Next Diver show is February 22nd, and the next Andrew Fraker & Sons show is one month later.

Recap
Finally got to see Tomorrow The Moon again, and while hints of their old band Phantom Helmsman are definitely creeping back in, they're still very much a space-rock band at heart. Definite elements of early Pink Floyd and King Crimson in the mix, along with a cover of "The Carpet Crawlers" from Genesis that was a pleasant surprise.

The Diver homage to the Beatles on Ed Sullivan was fun to do on Saturday night, even if the audience wasn't entirely paying attention.

2.03   monday
JC Brooks (City Winery)
The Uptown Sound frontman is covering his favorite female songwriters, which is an interesting concept.

Mutts with Delta Routine, Z (Township)
So, if the co-worker who told me I should see this band isn't my co-worker any more, and we're not friends on Facebook or anything, I may be off the hook for bringing them up when I see them listed.

2.04   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
This week's theme should probably songs from Seattle bands, right? Who's got dibs on "Silent Lucidity?" Also maybe a reprise of that Beatles set from the other night.

Hospitality with Air Waves (Schubas)
The Brooklyn trio just released their second full-length album on Merge Records, and the early press has the band maturing from their debut.

2.05   wednesday
Tributosaurus (Martyrs')
This month, they transform into Parliament Funkadelic. I don't want to think about who drew the short straw and has to take the stage wearing just a diaper.

2.06   thursday
Neutral Milk Hotel with Elf Power (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
The Huffington Post describes the band's 1998 breakthrough In The Aeroplane Over The Sea as "hallucinatory folk-rock," which then ushered in a mini-boomlet of similarly-minded bands via the Elephant Six imprint. Two sold-out shows would indicate that the reunion tour is doing pretty well so far, at least at the box office.

2.07   friday
Amon Amarth with Enslaved, Skeletonwitch (House of Blues)
I cannot imagine that Amon Amarth's latest is the first metal album about Norse mythology, nor will it be the last.

Swizzle Tree with Workout Music, Brighton MA, The Dead On (Double Door)
Until I get to know more local bands, I will cling to the facts like having played briefly in a band with one of the guys in Brighton MA like a man overboard clinging to a life preserver.

Neutral Milk Hotel with Elf Power (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing.

Tributosaurus (Wire, Berwyn)
See Wednesday's listing.

2.08   saturday
Manowar (Concord Music Hall)
This metal band originated with a roadie for Black Sabbath back in 1980, and doesn't seem to have looked back since. They also may be exactly the band I was referring to before when I said there had probably been earlier metal albums devoted to Norse mythology.

David Crosby (City Winery)   SOLD OUT!
I'm sure the performance from such a giant in the American musical pantheon would be pretty amazing given the intimacy of the venue, but a sold out show with an aging demographic that may not go to many concerts in what are pretty cramped quarters could make it a rough go as an audience member. Not sure if I would chance it, had I been on the ball when tickets went on sale.

Dr. Dog with Saint Rich (Riviera Theatre)
Saw one review that described the Philadelphia hipsters as getting back to their roots. This does not make me want to see them, as I'm guessing that one time I saw them live (Pitchfork?) several years ago was representative of their "roots," and the overarching conclusion I reached was that these guys couldn't be bothered to figure out how to make their instruments sound good. But they had mustaches!

2.09   sunday
The Pixies with Cults (Riviera Theatre)
Really disappointed with the legendary band when I saw them at Pitchfork. Since then, they've had to replace their bassist again, but I don't think she was the problem.

David Crosby (City Winery)   SOLD OUT!
See Saturday's listing.
