list.in.to.chicago this week: 02.10.2014

Caught the Beatles anniversay special over the weekend. Pleasantly surprised by Imagine Dragons, and probably my favorite performance was the Eurythmics reunion. I'm assuming it was all recorded along with the Grammys, which means that was one long event to sit through. It also means the producers of the special went out of their way to not show Taylor Swift pretty much at any point.

Pick of the week
Nothing jumping out at me, but you can see a solo set from Susan Voelz on Tuesday for $7, which doesn't suck.

Regular office hours at Vaughan's this week. Diver is back next week. Andrew Fraker & Sons are back next month.

Recap
So, I didn't see anything last week, but plenty of shows generated their own news. David Crosby postponed his City Winery dates until July, Manowar had to relocate to Logan Square Auditorium after the DJ on the third floor of Concord Music Hall pushed the bass to the point where the ceiling fell in, and it turns out that Zwan and A Perfect Circle veteran Paz Lenchantin is the new bassist for the Pixies.

2.10   monday
Mer with Alex V, Wesley John Cichosz, Jeremy Mederich (Schubas)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
This is a singer-songwriter showcase hosted by Mer, which features Wes Cichosz, who you may recall from previous lists.

Mutts with Common Shiner, Kane Place Record Club (Township)
Yeah, I know I let myself off the hook for writing about this band last week, but two Mondays in a row looks like a residency, which is totally list-worthy.

2.11   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
So, I'm debating whether to try out the cocktail kit this week, or wait until the weather gets a little nicer.

Angélique Kidjo (City Winery)
The Grammy-award winning singer is from the African nation of Benin, and her full name is Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo, which clearly wouldn't fit on a marquee anywhere.

Honey & Buffalo with We/Or/Me, Susan Voelz (Schubas)
Violinist-about-town Susan Voelz seems like a bigger deal than the opening act on a Tuesday night bill.

2.12   wednesday
Elements of Style with Forgotten Species, Michelles (Schubas)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
This is reportedly the band's last show for a while, and when they return, I expect any new songs to be primarily about raising kids.

Emerson Hart with Logan Brill (City Winery)
The fact that I constantly have to check what late-90s adult alternative band Hart sang for makes me think he should have maybe stuck with that band instead of launching a solo career. It was Tonic, by the way.

2.13   thursday
Airborne Toxic Event with Kongos (Cubby Bear)
Pretty sure this one is free as long as you get to the venue early enough. Fortunately, the weather is supposed to actually get above freezing for the first time in longer than I care to remember.

2.14   friday
Mayer Hawthorne with Quadron (Park West)
Neo-soul from a guy who at least grew up in the vicinity of Detroit, even if he now hails from Los Angeles. The Reader had good things to say about opening act Quadron.

10,000 Maniacs (City Winery)
Admit it, Natalie Merchant could have rejoined the band, and you wouldn't have noticed. She hasn't, and the band currently has two of the original members.

Jeff Tweedy (The Vic)
The Wilco frontman is playing his Annual Benefit for Academic Scholarship shows. It's not posting as sold out, but it's got to be close.

My Blue Valentine with Lutz, Little Missiles, JB Little (Quenchers Saloon)
There are Valentine's Day shows, anti-Valentine's Day shows, Valentine-themed shows, but as far as I can tell, only one show with a band whose name includes "Valentine." So there's that.

2.15   saturday
Ekoostik Hookah with Glostik Willy (Reggie's Music Joint)
I don't know which is more surprising. That Ekoostik Hookah is still a thing, or that they are now influencing the spelling choices of newer, younger bands.

Freddie Jones Band (Joe's)
It's been 20 years since the the major-label version of the album from the local roots rock band that spawned "In A Daydream," which makes me suspicious that this is an anniversary show that will revisit that album, given that they don't seem to have released anything new since ending their 4-year hiatus back in 2005.

Kele Okereke with Inphinity, Kalendr, Kid Delicious (Spy Bar)
Normally, I don't do electronic/DJ sets, but this is the lead singer from Bloc Party, so I'm at least mildly intrigued.

Jeff Tweedy (The Vic)
See Friday's listing.

2.16   sunday
Justin Timberlake (United Center)
We got a short break from the mega-stars on Madison "series," but that ends with Timberlake touring in support of The 20/20 Experience.
