list.in.to.chicago this week: 04.28.2014

Totally spaced the latest installment of Tributosaurus as The Beatles in last week's list. Sorry about that.

Pick of the week
The standouts for me would be Peelander-Z at Reggie's Rock Club on Thursday, Bladerunner at the same venue on Saturday, and EMA at Empty Bottle on Sunday.

list.in.to.COZ
Regular office hours at Vaughan's on Tuesday, and then it's Diver at Fado on Saturday night.

Recap
Really enjoyed We Are Scientists on Friday night. They just seem to have so much fun playing, and Keith Murray has some serious guitar skills that you typically don't hear in modern indie-rock. They also seem like they'd be content cracking wise at each other for a solid hour without playing a note.

4.29   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
In which we rehearse songs we want to try on the Diver gig this Saturday, and celebrate either the Bulls surviving elimination, or the official kickoff of their pursuit of a free agent shooting guard and/or Carmelo Anthony.

Alter Bridge with Monster Truck, Man the Mighty (House of Blues)
So, it turns out that the brother of a high school classmate of mine does a lot of concert films and documentaries, including the latest from the former members of Creed.

Diana Ross (Chicago Theatre)
My enduring memory of Diana Ross is still the opening ceremonies of the 1994 World Cup in Chicago, where the legendary singer was supposed to score a goal from four or five yards in front of the net, but somehow managed to miss.

Peter Wolf (City Winery)
Not sure how far he'll dig into the J. Geils songbook, but this might be a rare opportunity to hear "Freeze Frame" somewhere other than a sports arena.

4.30   wednesday
Diana Ross (Chicago Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
Peter Wolf (City Winery)
See Tuesday's listing.

5.01   thursday
Peelander-Z with Downtown Brown, Ghost Sector (Reggie's Rock Club)
Okay, this is the Japanese technicolor punk rock band that played Riot Fest last summer and left me feeling like I had been playing old Nintendo games after dropping acid. Seriously weird, but a whole lot of fun.

Yo La Tengo with Phil Cohran (Concord Music Hall)
One of the more high-profile shows from this week's CIMM Fest, with the Hoboken indie legends holding court in Logan Square.

5.02   friday
Terri Lyne Carrington's Mosaic Project (Symphony Center)
Probably the second-most well-known female jazz drummer behind Cindy Blackman.

These New Puritans with Taught Abroad (SPACE, Evanston)
I had been seeing ads for this show on the Reader site quite a bit, but when I listened to the London band's new record, it didn't really register much of an impression. The Reader compared them to Kid A-era Radiohead, but at first listen, I don't hear...no, wait, there it is. A bit more ork pop than that, though.

Bronze Radio Return with Hey Monea! (Lincoln Hall)
Recommended by the bass player from Andrew Fraker & Sons. Their last record came out last summer, so either they're doing the "new band that tours a lot" thing, or they may have something new coming soon.

5.03   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ LIVE!
In which we try out the songs we rehearsed at Vaughan's on Tuesday. #circleoflife

Bladerunner (Reggie's Rock Club)
Um, John Zorn, Bill Laswell and Dave Lombardo have a band? Seriously? How did I not hear about this by now?

Yakuza with Kabuki Mono, Pavlov (Reggie's Music Joint)
An early free show that might be a nice appetizer for the main event in the big room later on.

Aretha Franklin (Chicago Theatre)
Apparently it's Diva Week on State Street!

Cloud Nothings with Protomartyr, Ryley Walker (Lincoln Hall)
Part of the new trend where playing really loud, sloppy post-punk has come to define guitar-based music. See also Japandroids, Ty Segall. Not coincidentally, this is part of why I appreciate We Are Scientists' guitar prowess.

These New Puritans with Matchess (Empty Bottle)
See Friday's listing, but in the city. And part of CIMM Fest.

5.04   sunday
EMA with Trust, Mozart's Sister, Downtown Boys (Empty Bottle)
Angel Olsen with Promised Land Sound (Lincoln Hall)
Sunday night is a good night for new female artists. EMA had one of my favorite records of 2011 with Past Life Martyred Saints, and a few listens has me liking her new one as well. Angel Olson seems cut somewhat of the same cloth, but with a bit more traditional indie-rock, like maybe Sharon Von Etten with a little garage-rock mixed in. EMA is part of CIMM Fest.
