list.in.to.chicago this week: 10.13.2014

See, if I had gotten this out on time, I would have missed some big concert news.

Pick of the week
I considered telling you that the Foo Fighters tickets for Friday at Cubby Bear went on sale at, say, 10:30am on Wednesday, but I can't be that guy. On a somewhat less blockbuster level, Bombay Bicycle Club (Tuesday, Park West), Gaslight Anthem (Thursday, Aragon) and Temples (Thursday, Park West) all seem like reasonable choices.

list.in.to.COZ
Vaughan's on Tuesday night, and Fado with Diver on Saturday.

Recap
So, we're pretty sure Sharon Van Etten was just a little bit drunk on Friday night, but while it came out in her between song banter, it didn't seem to affect her overall performance, with her new songs still retaining the introspective power from the record.

10.14   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
With the imminent arrival of the Foo Fighters, it might be time for me to pull out an all-Foos set.

The Rural Alberta Advantage with July Talk (Metro)
Metro has been all over this one on Twitter, and I can't tell if it's because they're really enthusiastic about the band or if tickets haven't been selling.

Jackson Browne (Chicago Theatre)
It's been over 25 years since Running on Empty and, well, Browne shows no signs of slowing down. He's been releasing records every 3 or 4 years, with a new one called Standing in the Breach in 2014.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra featuring Stewart Copeland (Symphony Center)
So this is a screening of the 1925 silent film Ben-Hur, with an original score composed and performed by the former drummer of the Police. That's not something you see every day.

Bombay Bicycle Club with Milo Greene, Luxley (Park West)
After catching a bit of the webstream for their Lollapalooza set, the impression I got from this band was a slightly less catchy but musically more competent version of Vampire Weekend.

10.15   wednesday
Ani DiFranco with Jenny Scheinman (Old Town School of Folk Music)
When I first saw her some twenty years ago, she already had about a million live shows under her belt, and it showed in how she just owned the stage and connected with the audience. I can only imagine how sharp another million or so shows will have made her.

Glenn Tilbrook with Jefferson Grizzard (City Winery)
One half of the core writing team from Squeeze does the mini-tour of sophisticated small rooms in Chicagoland.

10.16   thursday
Ryan Adams with Butch Walker (Chicago Theatre)
The new self-titled album from the prolific Adams has gotten pretty good reviews so far. It's pretty much what you'd expect from him at this point.

Gaslight Anthem with Against Me!, Cory Branan (Aragon Ballroom)
Out of the gate, the new album from the New Jersey band seems to be branching out from all the Springsteen comparisons, but after a few songs, they're back in that comfort zone.

Alkaline Trio with Empires (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
As I understand it, the twist with the "Past Lives" tour is that, while Alkaline Trio is revisiting their recorded output in its entirety over four sold-out nights, they're not saying which albums are going to be performed on which nights.

Temples with Districts (Park West)
Not to be confused with Chvrches. This English band is either a throwback to the psychedelic era of British rock, or at least a throwback to when Oasis was throwing back to the psychedelic era of British rock.

Electric Six with Soft White Sixties, Lasers and Fast and Shit (Double Door)
The Detroit garage-glam rock band is usually good for one or two stops at Double Door per year.

Larry Coryell Trio (Jazz Showcase)
The venerable jazz guitarist does his annual stint at the Showcase, alongside Paul Wertico and Larry Gray.

Stanley Clarke (The Promontory)
With Stewart Copeland in town on Tuesday and the former Return to Forever bassist here on Thursday, we just need to fly Deborah Holland in so we can have an Animal Logic reunion!

Glenn Tilbrook with Jefferson Grizzard (SPACE, Evanston)
See Wednesday's listing.

10.17   friday
Foo Fighters (Cubby Bear)
Apparently, the Cubby Bear is where Dave Grohl saw his first ever punk rock show, so it's where he and his band will be celebrating the debut of the Sonic Highways documentary series on HBO, which travels the country talking about music as the band records their new album of the same name. Tickets on sale Wednesday at 10am.

Chromeo with Wave Racer (Riviera Theatre)
The electronic act is also doing a DJ set at The Mid later on. Not sure how you tell the difference.

Alkaline Trio with Hide (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing.

Larry Coryell Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

10.18   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)
I may try to get the boys to learn "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" from Arctic Monkeys in time for this week's show. We'll see.

Ladies & Gentlemen with the Dead On, Assembly (Township)
Not sure if this is the same band as THE Ladies & Gentlemen, who were one of my favorite local bands about ten years back. Here's hoping.

Airborne Toxic Event with In the Valley Below (The Vic)
Last seen in Chicago in February with Kongos opening for them, so you can tell who's on the way up and who's on the way down out of that pair.

Yakuza with Jar'd Loose (Beat Kitchen)
Chicago's favorite avant-metal band, but there aren't really that many to choose from.

Pharoah Sanders with the Chicago Underground Duo (The Promontory)
I have to say, the quality of the jazz bookings at the new Hyde Park venue has been pretty solid so far, with sax legend Sanders on the bill this week.

Alkaline Trio with All Eyes West (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing.

Larry Coryell Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

10.19   sunday
Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette (Symphony Center)
What seemed like a jazz trio supergroup has become a pretty long-lasting partnership. Most of the artists of the be-bop era are gone by this point, so it's the post-bop and fusion guys who are now the elder statesmen of the jazz scene.

Sinead O'Connor (City Winery)
I'm going to use this as an excuse to pay tribute to the late Jan Hooks, because my enduring memory of her on Saturday Night Live was playing O'Connor in the Sinatra Group sketch. "Sinbad O'Connor...I'm looking at you and I'm thinking cue ball in the side pocket!"

Alkaline Trio with Treasure Fleet (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing.

Larry Coryell Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.
