(editor's note: I managed to just notice that this three-year old entry was never published. Weird.)
I know that American soccer fans sound like Chicken Little a lot of the time, but this is ridiculous.
First, ESPN throws the Galaxy-Chivas USA "derby" (no, I'm not calling it the "Honda Super Clasico" or whatever they branded it) to tape delay so that the NFL human resources department can announce they're expanding their headcount.
Fortunately for me, I had padded my TiVo with about five minutes over the allotted and original scheduled two hours of soccer, because right around the stroke of midnight central time, as the telecast neared halftime, one of the cables holding the "Sky Cam" either broke or went slack, and the camera crashed on the sideline.
Eventually, they showed the replay from the falling camera itself. It was hysterical. I don't recall hearing much from Eric Wynalda from that point until halftime, which I'm assuming is because he was laughing too hard.
As for the game, I don't see it as a derby as much as the "Farmington Lookalike Bowl," with Landon Donovan playing the part of Detective Shane Vendrell and Ezra "EZ" Hendrickson as Officer Julian Lowe.
Donovan and Walt Goggins (Shane Vendrell)
EZ and Michael Jace (Julien Lowe)
