MOERFELDEN TRAIN STATION (12:32am local time) -- It's not like there's anyone here that would know if I just said I had gotten off my train and walked back to the hotel. But I want this to serve as a lesson for all you would-be travelers out there. Count the number of stops until yours, and try not to get lost in some revelrie about your last night in another country when you should be paying attention to those stops.
Since Walldorf and Moerfelden usually seem joined at the hip, my first instinct is to walk. As long as I know where the train tracks are, I should be fine. In practice, this seems like less of a good idea after 100 yards or so. The next train in the other direction is in a half hour, so the urge to keep moving is supplanted by the urge NOT to be stuck in the middle of nowhere in a country where you don't speak the language and only have about 2 Euro in your pocket because you were trying to run out of local currency by morning.
Plus, there are extra trains during the World Cup, so it's only fifteen minutes, and then one stop and then the twenty minute walk. Looks like I might stay up all night after all.
