I guess I didn't realize just how dire the Fire's defensive situation is. With injuries to Jim Curtin, Jordan Russolillo, Osei Telesford and Diego Gutierrez, and with Jeff Curtin nowhere to be seen, the Fire lined up Dasan Robinson, C.J. Brown and Gonzalo Segares in Saturday's match on Saturday.
That's not really news in and of itself, but with Bruno Menezes being the only nominal defender on the bench, you start to see the bigger picture. Logan Pause can drop back in a pinch, but still, that's not a lot of defenders.
It doesn't become truly clear until you look at the lineup for the Fire Reserves on Sunday:
Chicago Fire Reserves (0-4-2) – GK Jon Busch; D-Bruno Menezes (Daniel Zwerling 77), D-Landy Mattison, D-Lee Zarzecki; M-Joe Zewe (Kenniel Martin 68), M-Justin Mapp (Jerson Monteiro 35), M-Thiago, M-Brian Plotkin, M-Mike Banner; F-Floyd Franks, F-Chad Barrett (Calen Carr 45)
Menezes is the only rostered defender in that lot, so it's no surprise the reserves got shellacked 4-0. Makes you feel a bit sorry for Jon Busch.
Anyway, all this makes the imminent arrival of Wilman Conde that much more important, and also not necessarily an indictment of the current defensive corps, which is looking more like a defensive corpse.
Apparently, at the fan forum, Osorio said they were also after an unnamed Polish central defender.
