The cynical read of this "MLS Newcomer of the Year" award is that it's tailor-made to laud Becks in an attempt to salvage his value to the 2007 season. Which is made even more cynical by Beckham's omission from the list of "examples" in the press release.
I'm not quite that cynical this morning. In fairness, it's a little more competitive than that, with Juan Pablo Angel and Luciano Emilio probably the front-runners, only because Juan Toja missed a lot of matches due to injury. Personally, I'd root for Maykel Galindo as a dark horse, because he's such an explosive force for Chivas USA.
