Announced attendance last night at Toyota Park was 17,834. I'm not going to say I owe Guppy an apology for yesterday's post, only that my caveat of "unless he's already got 15K pre-sold" may have been in effect.
In other quotes in the press that the Fire boss might regret, he told Crain's Chicago Business the following in an article on the team's inability to close a deal for jersey sponsorship:
“I believe there is a clearer path through to profitability,” Mr. Guppy said. “We hope to reach the light at the end of the tunnel within a couple of years.”
Once again, I'm not saying he's wrong, only that -- as was the case with the attendance for last night -- entering these sorts of predictions into the public record can be a very dangerous game, and my experience with Mr. Guppy is that he tends to say a bit too much in this regard. If he's willing to hold himself accountable if he's wrong, then great, more power to him. I just get the impression that he's talking out of his ass, but that's because I can't shake the used car salesman vibe with him. It may just be the way he talks, but it's there.
To be fair to Guppy, by early Thursday morning my ticket rep told me 16,000 had been sold. So if he made the comments late Wednesday or early Thursday, he was on solid ground.
