Okay, so the Fire did not buy the old Post Office. It's probably too soon to abandon Toyota Park, anyway. But as I was biking down Elston Avenue, I passed the Morton Salt plant and thought that could work, if Morton ever gave up on the location.
Turns out it's too small.
Then I saw this story, and it got me thinking about newspaper printing plants. Let's say that, as part of cost-cutting measures, or consolidation, or some other upheaval, the Tribune decides to sell off its printing plant at Chicago Avenue and the river. While not as cool as the Post Office, it would still be a pretty awesome spot to put a stadium. Plus, there's a built-in time horizon, where the Fire could just keep an eye on the property in case anything else particularly crazy happens to the newspaper industry.
Plus, it would mark the first time the Trib actually did anything useful regarding soccer.
And yes, I realize this will almost certainly never happen, but it's fun to think about, mostly because I have an awful lot of free time.
