Due to a quirk in my musical schedule, and the NBA playoffs, I've been watching a fair bit of live TV lately. Which means subjecting myself to more commercials than usual. I think my overarching conclusion is that the terrible advertisng market has bled away the smart people from the industry.
First off, I understand that Kiefer Sutherland is a hot actor right now, but before you cast him as the disembodied voice of your product based on his star turn in 24, shouldn't you consider that he was the disembodied voice of a homicidal gunman in the recent flick Phone Booth? This is less of an issue in the MGD spots, as there's less voice, but MCI is a phone company. That can't be a good association.
Second, there's Baker's Square. On the one hand, perhaps pie after a nice dinner is like an engagement ring at the end of a date, although it's still a heck of a stretch. On the other, with a big honkin' cheeseburger with grilled onions representing the date, I have a hunch the relationship may be over as soon as she asks if she looks fat in those jeans.
Finally, K-Y heat-activated what? And I thought the drug companies had a hard time selling products they couldn't describe.
