Playing To Lose

Sorry, missed a week of Supernova blogging. To make a long story short, I didn't disagree with the double-sided hatchet that cut Jill and Josh. I couldn't picture either of them in front of this band. And the Zayra experiment is finally over. I still wanted her to tackle "Army of Me" instead of butchering that Blue October tune.

Anyway, my strong hunch is that Storm actually wanted to land in the bottom three this week, for reasons directly related to the way Magni launched it out of the park with "Creep" last night. It puts the song selection entirely in your hands, so you can sing something you know you can absolutely kill. It's what has kept Patrice in the running this far. I started picking up on that vibe from Storm on Tuesday, but seeing her get visibly upset when she didn't have to sing on Wednesday night sealed the deal.

Also, I'm a little upset that nobody called Toby out on messing up about half the words to "Solsbury Hill." On the one hand, it's a deceptively hard song to sing, and I'm sure the Aussie didn't realize that when he decided to run through the mansion naked to get it. On the other, it's one of my favorite songs and I hate to see it butchered like that. I don't know if the "rockers" routinely screw up words like that, and I only noticed it because it's a song I sing on a fairly regular basis, but I didn't like it.

On to the leaderboard.

  1. Dilana (-) Still the clear front-runner, and being the first to sing in front of the entire band posed no problems at all.
  2. Magni (^) Both performances this week were really strong, but he seemed to really get inside "Creep" and deliver something special. Heck, Dilana was in tears when he finished.
  3. Ryan (^) His uncomfortableness has mutated into intensity, which has helped a lot, but I don't see the chemistry with the band happening. I suspect he's a qualilty songwriter, and I'm too lazy to click all the links on the website.
  4. Storm (v) Gambled and lost this week. She pretty clearly wanted a chance to really show off with a bottom three performance, but didn't get it. I agree with Navarro's comment that she can take the kind of criticism she received on Tuesday better than anyone there.
  5. Lukas (v) Jason has a fundamental problem with the quality of his voice, and when push comes to shove, that's going to do him in.
  6. Toby (v) Learn the fucking words, alright?
  7. Patrice (-) I love her to death, but she hasn't done enough to elevate her standing. "Message In A Bottle" is a tough song to mess with, as the band, or maybe it was Dave, suggested, unless you do the solo Sting version.
