One Track Mind (1988-1989)

About

This was my first band in college, and sort of the end of an era in how I thought about music. It was also the only band I've ever been kicked out of, but we'll dwell on that later. The lineup was Jamie Kieffer on vocals, Jorge Soltero on guitar, Chris Darnell on keyboards, Will Scheckel on bass, and myself on drums. For the most part, it was a cover band, but we started playing some of Chris' originals by the end of my tenure. I'm not terribly proud of some of the cover songs.

Highs and Lows

Well, after going something like 0 for 7 in high school, One Track Mind gave me my first and only win in a Battle of the Bands. Unfortunately, it took an entirely unironic version of "Freebird" to get it. Any pretense of musical dignity died on that day, so if I ever try to take some musical high road, I try not to think about it. In fact, I had totally forgotten about this band when I first put together the list of bands I had been in, clearly due to attempts to repress the memory. We also played "Freefalling" from Tom Petty, a song which I still have nightmares about.

My Contribution

Clearly, not song selection.

The End

Truth be told, getting kicked out of this band was one of the best things that ever happened to me, musically. After it happened, I secluded myself in the electronic music studio on campus and produced a 10-song "solo album" that I even sent out to record labels, and subsequently moved on to a mindset more conducive to original music, where you play 9 originals and 1 cover in a set, instead of the other way around. If you're wondering, the other "best things to happen to me musically" were probably going to Berklee College of Music for a summer and sharing a rehearsal space with my friend Steve. And maybe losing my job in May, but the jury's still out on that one.

Anyway, noone has ever come clean on why I was axed, but Jamie and Chris both belonged to a fraternity, and it just so happened that, as an intramural referee, I had forfeited a game from that same fraternity that had begun to get out of hand. It may have been that, or it may have been that I was just startlingly uncool at the time and was dragging the band down as a way to meet chicks. I mean, if you think I'm uncool now, I've got nothin' on Coz circa 1989.
